Construction begins today on a $11.2 million bridge project at U.S. 75 and 111th Street in Jenks, Oklahoma Department of Transportation officials said.

Workers will begin moving equipment into place around the intersection for the project, which will remove a highway traffic signal that has been known to cause congestion and wrecks.

"It can be a dangerous area," ODOT spokeswoman Kenna Mitchell said Monday.

Traffic on 111th Street will eventually be routed north to a temporary detour road while a bridge over the highway is being built. All lanes of U.S. 75 will be open during peak traffic hours of 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, Mitchell said.

The project was approved last month along with two other Tulsa County bridges. The Interstate 44 bridge over Darlington Avenue will be replaced with a six lane span, and a structurally deficient part of I-44 over 163rd East Avenue will get a new eight-lane span.
