A 6-year-old boy died Wednesday after crashing an all terrain vehicle near Sand Springs.

Daniel Brock Smith-Maynard of Sand Springs was driving a four-wheeler on a homemade dirt track at his grandfather’s house in the 7500 block of west 16th Street south in Tulsa at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

According to the OHP, the 6-year-old, who was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, took a curve too fast and rolled the vehicle once.

The boy, who landed three feet from the ATV, was transported to St. John Medical Center with head injuries and later died at the hospital.

Sorry the boy lost his life, but 4 wheelers are NOT made for 6 year olds to ride, especially by their selves. Time and time again you hear of young kids injuring or killing their self on them. Sooner or later maybe the parents will smarten up and not allow it. Some people say that 4 wheelers are dangerous, but no 4 wheeler has ever hurt, or killed anyone, it's the operator.

My sympathy to the family.

A very close friend, who works at a local hospital, says they see ATV injuries all the time. She says these, along with senseless child beatings, are the hardest to deal with.

I'm sure the family is in horror about this accident, pray for them.

I know that grampaw or whoever only offered to allow the boy to ride in the nature of fun. Let him have an exciting experience to share with his classmates for the thanksgiving holidays.

Young man, poor little five year old boy. Although this is the time in your life where the world would like to see you giggling and playing. It is now time to rest your downy little head your father will be praying. No longer to be seen by the adoring mother that you love. As your soul rests in peace waiting for the coming of your Lord. Hold still little one and know that you will be missed and adored. How merciful, you will never know the evil in this world that is abhorred. Sleep sweet young soul.

Ever notice that the majority of atv fatalities involve kids or drunks?

Condolences to the family/friends.

Homemade dirt track? As opposed to a factory made one?

So sad to read about this. But, what in the world is a 6 year old doing driving an ATV????

Ol City Boy, (11/26/2009 9:39:25 AM)
I have a friend who is an Emergency Room physician and he thinks ATVs should be outlawed based upon the nasty injuries and especially the deaths (of all ages) he's had to see and treat in the ER both with and without helmets. The deaths of those under 15 yrs. old bother him especially as they didn't have to happen.

This is so sad.

I don't understand why any adult would allow a child to drive an ATV. I think the adult should be held responsible for the death, other than the fact he is going to have to live with the memory of it.

I agree with DBJohn. No 6 year old should be driving an ATV at any time or anywhere! Any adult that allows this to happen, should be held accountable.

I pray this story will be a wake-up call to parents and grandparents, alike.

These things are very, very dangerous. Six year olds, or "close-to"s, ......have no business being on one.

I feel for the the family(s) involved and I hope someday they can get beyond this tragedy. But, I do agree that accountability should be held to a certain extent in this case on the individual that allowed a 6 year old to operate an ATV. Way out of line and extremely poor judgement. Fines and probation would be very appropriate.

On a day when we are supposed to be giving thanks, I read about this needless death.

My sincere condolences to the family.

Until ATVs come with a roll cage and restraint harness system, kids under 16 have no business on them.

I know, I know, you gotta let kids have fun and grow up. Problem is, how many of these accidents will it take to convince parents of the danger of ATVs?

Sadly, this young boy will not be able to learn from this experience. His family will learn a lesson, but too late unless they have other children.

Dangit! Such a needless tragedy.

If the kid died of head injuries then the helmet wasn't fitted properly. Somebody elses bucket he strapped on. Still, 6 years old. Grandpa and the parents should be charged with manslaughter.

LPD,.

the last ten NASCAR drivers killed in accidents, all died of head injuries, and were wearing the most state of the art helmets known to man.......... $5K to $10K, .. form fitted helmets.

And no,........none of the helmets suffered a catastrophic failure. Death in three quarters of the cases was due to one's brain slamming against the side of one's shull. In one instance, the driver's face impacted the steering wheel/column.

Let's let the authorities sort this one out. I trust them to find the answers.

I remember discussions whether 6 year olds should play in football leagues due to the possibility or injury. All people make decisions what they allow their children to participate in an activity. This is a horrible accident that took the child's life. I will not sit in judgement on anyone in this family. God bless and comfort you for your loss.
