Merkel's rival admits 'bitter defeat' in German elections

BERLIN — The challenger to Chancellor Angela Merkel, Frank-Walter Steinmeier of the Social Democrats, has conceded defeat in Germany's election.

Steinmeier told supporters Sunday: "There is no talking around it: this is a bitter defeat."

Projections show that Steinmeier's party — which has been in the German government for the past 11 years — is headed for its worst parliamentary election result since World War II. It captured well under 25 percent of the vote in Sunday's national election.

Merkel's conservatives did well in the vote and should be able to form a new center-right government.

Not if Palin runs as our choice. The Republicans need to run someone who is closer to the middle & they would have won it last time.

In fact if McCain would have chosen Romney or a dozen other candidates besides Palin, a former newscaster, who spent her time putting her foot in her mouth and whining, he would have easily won.

Many Republicans and conservatives had a tough time with her as a VP candidate. Senator McCain was 73 and a 2 time cancer survivor. No one with a brain wanted Palin with her finger on the button.

No one thought President Obama would continue the massive bail out that Bush had initiated. Giving 1st time home buyers 9K from taxpayers money when they are buying a 200K home. All of this while sinking corporation's CEOs are making more than rock stars or successful elite athletes from taxpayer bail-out money.

Tired of labels like conservative and liberal. Just want someone who does what is right for middle America and does not mortgage or sell out the future of our children for generations to come.

Healthcare needs to be reformed because small businesses cannot afford to provide it to workers. It is not affordable. The problem is when the healthcare lobby gets through with modifying it, it will serve no one but the lobbyist who will end up writing it.

If there is a new candidate for Congress that says he owes nothing to corporations, the religious right, or the fringe groups he probably has my vote. Congress is not working and I'm not voting to keep a drunk, a nut, or someone who prides himself on being the most conservative(also most ignorant). An independent might get more for OK than these rubber stamps we have sent to Congress to look out for the American people. They look out for themselves, period. Get rid of incumbents!!!
