WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama says there is no easy answer to the problem of rising energy prices, dismissing Republican plans to address the problem as little more than gimmicks.

"We know there's no silver bullet that will bring down gas prices or reduce our dependence on foreign oil overnight," Obama said Saturday in his weekly radio and Internet address. "But what we can do is get our priorities straight and make a sustained, serious effort to tackle this problem."

Oil prices are approaching last year's highs as tensions increase over Iran's nuclear program. The rise pushed gasoline prices Friday to a national average of $3.65 a gallon, the highest ever for this time of year. A spike in gas prices is normal in spring, but it came earlier than usual this year in large part because of world fears that the growing confrontation with Iran will crimp oil supplies. Iran is the world's third-largest crude supplier.

Rising oil prices weigh on the economy, pushing leisure and business travel costs higher. Every 1-cent increase in the price of gasoline costs the economy $1.4 billon, analysts say.

Obama said Republicans have one answer to the oil pinch: Drill.

"You know that's not a plan, especially since we're already drilling," Obama said, echoing his remarks earlier in the week. "It's a bumper sticker."

Obama is pushing what he calls an "all-of-the-above" approach to the problem of limited energy resources, meaning an attempt to seek out alternative energy sources while reducing consumption of traditional fuels.

In the Republican address, Texas Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison blamed the rise in gasoline prices partly on the Obama administration, which she said has blocked some potential new sources of oil and gas.

"We can't slow down global demand for oil and gas, but we can do a lot more here at home to assure that we have the energy we need and to halt skyrocketing costs," she said. "President Obama's policy has resulted in an unprecedented slowdown in new exploration and production of oil and gas."

For all the political claims, economists say there's not much a president of either party can do about gasoline prices. Certainly not in the short term. But it's clear that people are concerned — a new Associated Press-GfK poll says 7 in 10 Americans find the issue deeply important — so it's sure to be a political issue through the summer.

The price of gasoline, which is made from crude oil, has soared with oil prices. The national average jumped by nearly 12 cents per gallon in a week, with state averages above $4 per gallon in California, Alaska and Hawaii.

At $3.65 per gallon, gasoline is still below last year's high of $3.98 and the record $4.11 set in 2008.

Domestic production at an 8 year high. Stock market nearly doubled. More jobs created in 3 years than Bush's 8. Facts get in the way sometimes with people who think "Nobama" is something really cool that they just thought of. Google "Obama Deragement Syndrome" and have a nice day, Skeeter!

690420,so why not write Sen. Inhofe and get him to lower prices,oh I forgot he is busy writing his book,Obama explain why oil prices have gone up,I guess you must have not heard that the oil companies got a 10 billion dollar subsidy, while making record profits, that George W. Bush gave them and republicans continue to support,so your write the government should step in and lower prices,we need more government control, like we have in Oklahoma.

When Bush was president, it's was Bush's fault when gas prices rose, but now that Obama is in office, it's big oil's fault for high gas prices. When Obama took office, gas was 1.89 per gallon. Obama wants high gas prices so he can push for green energy. All Obama has to say is that he's going to lax regulations so we can drill more , but unless he can read those words off the teleprompter, he won't say them!

Sorry Trust, you can't be trusted.

"According to the GasBuddy gasoline price tracking web site, the price of a gallon of regular gas was around $1.79 when Mr. Obama took office. Today the national average is $3.58." - Washington Times

now...consumer reports state that in jan 2009 after the pres took office..prices were 1.89 per gal....because the oil barons thought obama was going to castrate them and take their land...they appeased him until they realized he was their pet monkey from kenya and would not bite the hand that feeds them.

I stand corrected...bottom line...technically the president did have prices down below 2 dollars...at one time...just by his mere presence in office they dropped from bush's record highs....there...you were right I was kinda wrong...

I've got to give you credit trust, for admitting your mistake. Thumbs-up!

....I know of one liberal on here that claims someone hijacked her account, ...when she says something real stupid.

People who go around quoting the gas price at the time Obama took office fail to note that it was around $4.00 a gallon the summer before and the REASON it fell to half that price was that we had entered the worst recession in 80 years. Obama Derangement Syndrome.

Ferris Bueller (3 months ago)
So Obama had the "influence" to create massive drops in gas prices when entering office but is impotent now. I guess he lost that lovin' feelin'. You guys sure come up with some whoppers.

Longhorn Spam, when Clinton was president gas was 89 cents/gal.

"it's not my fault" obama keeps making his false claim he's looking out for the middle class.
his policies are driving up the costs of transportation (gasoline up 100% in 3 years and climbing), energy and food.
but obama will tell you it's not his fault.

obama keeps making his false claim he's drilling more than ever. That's a lie.
obama shut down drilling on federal lands over 3 years ago.
obama imposed moritoriums on deep water, shallow water and coastal drilling.
drilling is still up because of President Bush. (Thank you President Bush.)
drilling is still up because of private business on private land.

on federal land where obama DOES have control gulf leases are down, Rochy Mountain leases are down and obama has reduced access to only 3% of all federal lands known to have large supplies of oil below.

this is "it's not my fault" obama's oil policy

"...but obama will tell you it's not his fault."

According to this "character" (trying to be nice!) it is all Bush's fault!

As a democrat, I'll stop blaming Bush for the wrecked economy when you START blaming Bush for the things that Bush actually did. Obama Derangement Syndrome.

Corvetteguy (3 months ago)
You never, ever have to lead with "as a democrat"........trust me on that one.

.....you are left-wing liberal through and through.

Nobody should ever blame a president for high gas prices. Only political opponents do that sort of thing. We can judge a President on his overall approach to a national energy policy and Obama has it right. A mix of energy sources, incentives for reducing consumption and incentives for new technologies that are struggling to be developed is a good plan.

"Drill, baby, drill" is not an energy policy. We've known for decades that the price of energy was going to rise. Our prices are still low compared to the rest of the world. It is the 21st century whether you like it or not.

LISTEN....you people with short memories! Obama knows exactly what he is doing. He said he was going to take this country into the "green" world. And observe what he has done! EPA is shutting down oil exploration and development. Restrictions are in place to "clean up" our air" notice your increase in electricity bill lately? He dictated to car makers to build electric cars. He smothered Preferred Stock owners of GMC in favor of the Union. Transportation costs have sky rocketed (due to increase in fuel costs) i.e. increase in costs of groceries. AND HE SAYS THERE IS NO MAGIC BULLET! Of course NOT....he is just bidding his time and it will go away. But, this may be his archilles heel.

I don't think is correct for Inhofe to author a book that his Staffers researched on government time, for his own profits.
Trust (3 months ago)
Oil is a private industry..and owned these owners are capitalizing on fear and greed tactics ...there is absolutely no excuse for prices to be so high...its all profit for the big oil barons...The only real solution is to make oil a government controlled industry...and regulate prices...
Evolve123 (3 months ago)
Fuel prices are not controlled by anyone - other than perhaps speculators in Rotterdam.
But regressives never miss a chance to slime POTUS Obama.
It's getting harder as he continues to shovel out the dubby poo.
Rising employment, better housing news, stock market up (the smart money likes what it sees), 50 million more with healthcare.
Not to mention the pathetic lot of GOPers running for their nomination.

Dims never missed a chance to blame Bush. Fair game to blame oblamo.

I thought he said that green energy was the key step to save America from foreign oil dependence?
