OKTAHA — A member of a self-proclaimed Oklahoma patriot group was shot Tuesday morning in an apparent accident at an Oktaha survivalist store and gun range that last week made national headlines for posting a sign saying the establishment is “Muslim-free.”
Muskogee County Sheriff Charles Pearson said the owners of the Save Yourself Survival and Tactical Gear store began receiving threats after media coverage of their decision to put the sign in a front window. Members of the group went to the store to protect customers and the owners from physical harm and were also at the facility on Monday, Pearson said.
The sheriff said he did not know the name of the group but that one of its members was at the range Tuesday and had an old Colt .45 revolver with him.
“(The gun) fell out of a bucket holster and discharged, striking him in the wrist,” Pearson said, adding that the man’s injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.
The sheriff said after visiting the range Monday and Tuesday that it did not appear the group’s members were knowledgeable about firearms safety because of the way they were holding and storing the weapons. He emphasized the importance of using proper holsters to store guns and keeping fingers away from the trigger unless the user intends to fire during target practice.
Chad Neal, who owns the store with his fiance, Nicole Mayhorn, previously told the Tulsa World that the sign went up in response to the July shootings at two military installations in Chattanooga, Tennessee, which left six people dead including the shooter, who was of Middle Eastern descent.
Neal called Islam a “cult” and said he would not have “jihadis” in his store learning marksmanship in order to attack armed services facilities in Muskogee.
The sign drew criticism from the Council on American-Islamic Relations, with the group’s Oklahoma officials calling its placement illegal because it violates the Civil Rights Act of 1964. They called for the sign’s removal.

Tragedy after more tragedy. If it isn't the racism, it's the firearms. There's seriously something wrong with this…

None of the John Wayne's are around when the real shooting starts are else they forget they have a gun.

The Council on American Islamic Relations sent a news release to several media outlets that included a photo of their sign. When asked about it, the owners confirmed putting it there and explained why.

The Muskogee Phoenix named the "patriot." He's 57.

It's funny because you'd be in less danger from Muslims, than you are from the grubby ham-fisted hillbillies that actually hang out in the store.

Unfortunately guns are like everything else, bicycles, cars, stairs, bazookas. If you're around them often enough, there will more than likely be an accident of some kind.

I doubt there was much problems with Muslims using that gun store, so I guess they just wanted to be boisterous with their proclamation. Sometimes you stir up trouble and that's what you get. Story will probably die a slow death

A little tiny sign on a store in a tiny town. Without the media reporting this, no one would've probably ever known about it.. Unless the store owner initiated the media contact.
How did you happen upon the initial story Tulsa World?

Thats what happens when Barney puts his bullet in his gun. What a bunch of goobs.

I'd say the fellow was a pretty good shot if he got the wrist, that is a hard target to hit :-)

I would assume they have their CC, therefore, proper training was given at one time.

Why would you want a Colt revolver when you need a Colt semi-automatic? It is baffling to me.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention statistics:
In 2013 firearms (excluding BB and pellet guns) caused 84,258 nonfatal injuries (26.65 per 100,000 U.S. citizens) and 33,636 deaths (10.6 per 100,000).
There are 319 million people in the U.S., which means about 1 out of every 2,705 people in the U.S. was shot by a firearm in 2013; about 1 out of every 9,484 people in the U.S. was killed by a firearm in 2013.
Extrapolating over a typical lifetime of 74 years and assuming the above trends continue, 1 out of 37 people currently alive in the U.S. will be shot by a firearm during their lifetime; 1 out of every 128 people in the U.S. will be killed by a firearm during their lifetime, most well before they reach 74 years of age (about 1 out 192 will commit suicide with a gun, while 1 out of 384 will be shot to death by somebody else with a gun).

These gun fanatics have far more to worry about within their little group of baseless paranoia than they do from Islam. If the Islamists were really going to attack us, all they have to do is wait and smile, we will do the damage to us ourselves.

Based on the responses that Chick-Fil-A and the Indiana pizza place got for their same sex marriage policies, I'm surprised more businesses haven't taken the opportunity to profit from the ultra-conservatives fears. Wait a second, that gives me an idea.
Come to my store, Widgets R Us, where we proudly refuse service to anyone who's had an abortion, anyone who's on welfare, and anyone who looks a little terrorist-y based on beard length. They can't buy my widgets. Now if the Tulsa World would be so kind as to run a story about this, get it out in the mainstream media, I could just sit back and count my kickstarter donation money.

I buy all my guns from the anti-Muslim store having a raffle sale of a Confederate flag painted by George Zimmerman. Talk about stuff you can't make up. Now if only I could buy deflated bullets, I would be able to encompass all the ridiculous news stories in one transaction.
I still support the self-proclaimed Patriot group, I use the twitter hashtag #whitewristsmatter.

Since Sept. 11, 2001, nearly twice as many people have been killed by white supremacists, antigovernment fanatics and other non-Muslim extremists than by radical Muslims: 48 have been killed by extremists who are not Muslim, including the recent mass killing in Charleston, S.C., compared with 26 by self-proclaimed jihadists. If this store owner doesn't vet his 'patriot' groups, he could very easily be training twice as many terrorists than if he allowed Muslims.
Don Bell posted at 6:58 pm on Tue, Aug 18, 2015.
"big deal, accidents happen, even with weapons". Serously, accidents with weapons kill people. These "patriots" obviously don't know how to handle weapons, and that includes the owner.

If gun rights advocates want people to believe how safe and competent they are, this did the opposite

Those old Colt revolvers didn't have a hammer block safety. The firing pin could hit the primer hard enough to fire a round if dropped, which is why people who valued their life and limbs only loaded five rounds and kept the hammer resting on the empty sixth cylinder. This hombre's injuries might not be life threatening, but his wrist won't be good for diddly-squat anymore.

There is no such thing as an "accidental discharge", it's called a "negligent discharge".

Great. Barney Fife joined a "patriot group", dropped his gun and shot himself in the wrist. It wouldn't surprise me to learn he later purchased another gun to protect himself from himself. jiminy......
