FALLIN

HOSTESS WITH THE MOSTEST: Mayor Kathy Taylor had former President Bill Clinton in her house for a fundraiser then turned around and entertained a big group of Teach for America teachers for a pre-Thanksgiving feast. She's not quite through being mayor, but it's good to see Taylor's finding projects to keep herself busy. In her spare time maybe she can do something about the University of Tulsa football team and the giraffe's sore neck.

CONGRESSIONAL WEDDING BELLS: U.S. Rep. Mary Fallin married Oklahoma City attorney Wade Christensen last week. It was a family ceremony, but a newspaper photographer managed to find out about it and get to the church door in time to snap the happy couple's picture, which ended up on the front page of the Oklahoman. Fallin wore a handsome pink suit and the groom wore a tuxedo. They plan a short honeymoon in Florida before making residence in the governor's mansion.

BOOK VALUE: When he was the Tulsa World's executive editor, Bob Haring had a lot of bright ideas, but one of his best was Project ReDirectory, the nation's first effort to recycle telephone books.

Now in its 20th year, the campaign has led to the reuse of tons of paper and it has taught a generation about the value of environmental stewardship.

Sixteen Metropolitan Environmental Trust recycling collection sites for phone books are located throughout the area, including five locations in Tulsa. A complete list is available at: www.tulsaworld.com/redirectory . The campaign continues through Dec. 22

Thanks to MET for the effort, to AT&T for its sponsorship and to Haring for the bright idea.

SLICK EVENT: Arvest Winterfest's ice rink on Third Street between Denver Avenue and Frisco Streets (adjacent to the BOK Center) opened Friday afternoon and runs through Jan. 3.

This is the second year for Winterfest, which organizers expect to attract 100,000 people — double the crowd of last year. In addition to the skating rink Winterfest features carriage rides, concessions, live music and an occasional visit from Santa.

The giant Christmas tree is up and the skaters are on the pond ... er ... street. It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas.

GOOD DEED: Thanks go out to Amy Santee of the George Kaiser Foundation, who designated a portion of a grant to the Tulsa County Child Protection Coalition for renovation of family visitation rooms at the Department of Human Services offices in Tulsa. The rooms are used up to 14 times daily for children who are in state custody to visit with their parents. The Tulsa Advocates for the Protection of Children also contributed to the project, said Lynn Sossamon, TCCPC director, who brought the parties together.
