Church lady: Righteousness, Rep. Kern-style
By World's Editorial Writers

It appears that the people of the state of Oklahoma aren't a big enough flock for state Rep. Sally Kern. Now she wants to take her message of hellfire and brimstone all across the land, possibly even to the halls of Congress and maybe even the Oval Office.
Kern, best known for asserting that homosexuality is a greater threat than terrorism, plans to circulate for signatures the "Oklahoma Citizen's Proclamation for Morality," a document that would "acknowledge the need for a national awakening of righteousness."
Certainly we're all in favor of righteousness, though there's liable to be considerable disagreement over exactly how to define it.
More on that later. First let's get to Kern's new economic theory which, if proven accurate, could win her a Nobel Prize, or at least a chapter in economics textbooks:
"We believe our economic woes are consequences of our greater national moral crisis," a draft of her proclamation states.
The Oklahoma City Republican isn't the first to float that theory, but so far no adherents have been able to satisfactorily flesh it out. Maybe she's referring to financial greed and corruption. We'll anxiously await further details.
Apparently President Barack Obama's proclamation declaring June as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month was among factors motivating Kern to come up with her own, which, if it advances, would have no real official weight.
The draft version says signers are alarmed that the U.S. government is "forsaking the rich Christian heritage upon which this nation was built."
It also states signers are upset by Obama's disregard for "the biblical admonitions to live clean and pure lives by proclaiming an entire month to an immoral behavior."
Kern is entitled to her views, of course, just as the rest of us are. And while Kern and others hold that the Bible condemns homosexuality, many other equally spiritual Americans believe otherwise.
It would appear Kern and her ilk don't embrace an American tradition cherished by most citizens: tolerance of other people's beliefs and faith traditions. That precious freedom — to follow the religious tradition of one's choice — is a hard-won objective that is an underpinning of the American way of life. Apparently that's lost on Kern and company.

How much have the non tax paying freeloading churches helped with our economic woes? Isn't Rep. Kern's husband a preacher? The churches haven't helped this country economically since it was created.

tax them all! Kern is a vocal critic of reality. It's much easier to stand behind fairytales and cast stones at the heathens!...maybe we couls send her up to Alaska then they would a caribou barbie and an old polar bear!

Dear Editor,
Your continued attacks on Rep. Kern are puzzling. I am not sure about any of the "economic theory" put forth by your interpretation of her views, but your "moral" and "tolerant" view are skewed.
First, your editoral speaks of tolerance as if tolerance is a virtue or a "right". Tolerance is usually used when the disagreement is a matter of opinion or a preference between two correct choices. You are not applying your standard to Ms. Kern's position - where is your "tolerance" of her view.
Second, the practice of homosexuality is condemned as immoral and "sin" by every major world religion - in particular by Islam, Judiasm and Christianity. The point is not the person but the practice of homosexuality as an acceptable lifestyle when common sense of the mankind says it is wrong and unnatural. Even animals and insects do not practice homosexuality.
Ms. Kern does not judge or condemn the person but the practice of "wrong". These is no right way to tolerate "wrong".

"Where do the Republicans find all these clowns?"
Hmmm. They get voted into office. Whither the Democrat Party?
Rep. Kern was up for re-election last November. If she is such a pariah, why was she returned to office?
Oh, perhaps like greed, relative to the posts on the current Land Office malfeasance, "its just human nature".

bulldogmaster - Are you applying to be the poster child for intolerance? You have unintentionally written a jaw-droppingly funny satire of your own views.
Believe it or not, even religious views evolve. Every major world religion, including the Christian bible, once condoned and even encouraged human slavery. That doesn't make it "right" - or does it?
At last, I have finally met someone who would actually vote for Sally Kern - BECAUSE of her intolerant views.

ZZ - Do you really believe that getting a majority of votes makes someone respectable?
I've been hearing some unkind words from you about the current President - who was elected by the largest popular vote margin ever for a non-incumbent. I guess you'll have to drop all that now. Right?

Graychin, you probably didn't notice that bulldogmaster is kern's husband. Bulldog (kern) master (the supreme head of the household). So, he is going to be biased, and offended at the so called attacks.
Time for some legislation taxing the churches and letting them pay their fair share of the government they are trying to change.

Is it just me, or is Rep. Kern plotting to change Oklahoma into a state where ONLY white, heterosexual Christians can live?
I respect and support her right to say and think what she wants.
And if her district wants to keep her in office, well, that is democracy in action.
Still, I wonder sometimes if she and her husband (Dr. Stephen D. Kern, a Southern Baptist minister) are working to impose their own view of the world on the rest of us.
IMHO, that would be a very scary world.

>> there's liable to be considerable disagreement over exactly how to define it.
Righteous is exactly defined as a perfectly restored 1937 Studebaker.
>> economic woes are consequences of our greater national moral crisis
Probably true, but more likely due to moral failings of greed and covetousness and the unshakable belief in the free lunch.
>> And while Kern and others hold that the Bible condemns homosexuality
Actually, it does. In more than one place. Not that you have to accept it. But it is a verifiable matter of fact that the words are there.
>> President Barack Obama's proclamation declaring June as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month
As long as we are dedicating a month to special interest groups, a national cigarette smokers month is long overdue. The fact that many find cigarette smoking to be offensive is irrelevant. Such a month would prove how tolerant we are.
Personally, I'm still waiting on nude bicycling month.

The editorial states "Kern is entitled to her views, of course, just as the rest of us are. And while Kern and others hold that the Bible condemns homosexuality, many other equally spiritual Americans believe otherwise."
That's true, of course. And the "equally spiritual" Democrats believe that adultery, thievery, vote fraud, even sedition, is not only desirable but absolutely righteous.

"Glass houses", Royce.
I don't think I would be espousing the virtues of Republicans at a time when the Gov. Sanford (R) is blabbering about his "true love" (not his wife) from the South Carolina state house.
People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.
Sally Kern and her "Sally Says Proclamation" is STUPID. Not crazy......STUPID. You can overlook crazy. STUPID can be avoided and avoiding anything from her should be avoided as well.

All to often people who think of themselves as Christians forget just how revolutionary the New Testament is with its message of love and forgiveness. Jesus was a renegade and rebel and the "religious" people of the day despised him. Kern and other judgemental "religious" people need to decide whose side they are on. Jesus' or the Old Testament clerics who approved of treatments such as stoning.

That's what I was thinking, lizzy. I know when we herded cattle into the lots at the sale barn, the males would 'do' other males in the lots. I thought that weird, but they did.
I think our letter writers needs to check what they thought were facts before putting their pen to paper.

How many politicians are going to be caught between a rock and a hard place over one person's belief. When election time comes around, believe me, there are those who will be quick to point a "moral finger" at those who did or did not sign this "moral proclamation".

Gray,
I believe it is easy for the rabid faithful to overlook their own party's inability to field candidates capable of winning an election so they choose to engage in name calling that does nothing to advance the discussion (but presumably helps the poster feel better).
I believe the partisan answer might be "Who are we talking about?".
For example, "Sally Kern? No way! Barack Obama? Oh yes!".
