What the ...?: Congress scuttles road funding

What's up with those geniuses in Congress? First they scurry around to get massive stimulus funding in the pipeline in an effort to quickly jump-start the economy, and then they fiddle around and let regular transportation funding that would further aid the recovery lapse.

Not a good recipe for ensuring that the recovery will continue.

Oklahoma transportation leaders learned this week that two squirrelly actions by Congress will force the state to slash its November contracts from $53.5 million to only $6.2 million.

A total of 18 state projects, including three in the Tulsa area, will be delayed by the actions that left the Oklahoma Department of Transportation with no federal funds to expend next month.

The congressional actions — or should we call them inactions — are difficult for the average citizen to understand, but the failure of our national leaders to address this situation is incomprehensible.

Sen. Jim Inhofe, R-Okla, tried valiantly this past week to have at least some of the funding restored but unfortunately was unsuccessful. "Now we are going to pay the price,'' said Inhofe.

If action isn't taken fairly soon to restore the funding, the impact on Oklahoma could eventually reach $135 million.

ODOT Director Gary Ridley made the salient observation that the state was urged to hurry up and spend stimulus funding to create jobs, and now we're being forced to delay phases of some of those projects that were expedited. Didn't anyone think this course of action through?

One of the frustrations in this deal — apart from the fact that much-needed state projects are halted — is that highway construction is a classic, time-honored way in which federal spending can stimulate the nation's economy, which is supposedly what Congress is all about right now.

There's a chance that Congress will fix the problem by the end of this month, but that wouldn't be soon enough to restore the November work program. In fact, some of the delayed projects couldn't get back on schedule until early next year.

Inhofe blamed the funding snafu on politics, which comes as no surprise. Apparently it was just too much to ask of our leaders to put politics aside for once in favor of rescuing the economy and thousands of jobs.

I'm not the biggest fan of Sen. Jim Inhofe, but I try to give credit, where credit is due. He was in there fighting for Oklahoma. I would like to know where were the rest of our elected officials?

Clearly, the country is in the best of hands.

And the last sentence of this editorial shows a shocking level of naivete on the part of the Tulsa World editorial staff. When it comes to our current crop of national politicians, it is always too much to ask for them to put aside their personal political best interests in order to serve the best interests of the country.

And Inhofe only confirmed how little "pull" he really has in Washington. But I don't see a feeding frenzy of people rejoicing in his failure like they did when Obama failed to get the Olympics for Chicago - a far less significant event.

The majority of Oklahomans profess to be anti-Obama and anti-Stimulus, so what are these crocodile tears for fiscal irresponsibility?

The severance of these funds was put in place in 2007, so Conservatives should be applauding and yelling Bravo instead of crying in their beer...

Ah, it's the old case of having a cake and eating it too!

So, they would rather spend money on crap like what "polar bear" posted above than on realistic and necessary things like roads?

No wonder the politicians in D.C. are the butt of so many jokes.

Kudos to Inhofe for trying to save the funding, he does go to bat for Oklahoma.

Inhofe has said far too many silly things to be taken seriously anywhere outside of Oklahoma. His clout is gone and having him as an elected official will do no good for Oklahoma.

I'm ready to clean house in the Congress and Senate in 2010. Doesn't matter if they are Repubs, Dems, etc. Out with the old and in with the new.

Wonder if this had anything to do with all 77 Oklahoma counties voting for McCain-Palin last November?

Conseratives should be holding wild parites as this is just another of the 'destroy America' moves that are so popular these days. You said from the start you wanted America to fail. Looks like it is starting to work out for you.

Well, they don't call you guys the party of NO for nothing, do they?

And if you think I'm joking then look at it like this: The Republicans could see this coming and could have made a big deal out of it and looked like heros. This was a chance for you guys to really pull ahead in an area important to every one of us. But no, you just let let slide, knowing the Dems were bogged down in Health Care since you were the ones that bogged them down.

Thanks, Republicans. We will remember this one on election day.

You may be right come election time, but if you don't think it could get worse you had better thinik again! If Inhofe finally said something right, forget it, he either knew it was safe to speak or somebody told him to do so. He started yelling way to late but enough to say he 'tried'! Puke, Puke. Republicans waited and waited stalling as usual anything that tries moving ahead and look what we get...'still the shaft'. tHEY TRULY BELIEVE THAT BY DOING NOTHING AND CAUSING THINGS TO COME TO A CRAWL THEIR 'REASON TO ACT'. Huh, I still don't understand their way of thinking. It is NOT for ' THE PEOPLE' it is for their own BiG BUTT EGOS, Its for thier Party and for them only. Either way we and the country get screwed again...all for a good cause...??????I don't think so, its either , "we sorry, we tried" or the old "The other guys did it" better luck next time. puke, puke

Too bad that the senators for Oklahoma can't do something effective for Oklahoma. They only serve up the bitter empty stew pot of cynicism and invite all the Okies to sit at their barren table.

Mongo say majority party in Congress have much power. If you in minority party, most time no one listen.
Chairman of Committees (Budget, Appropriations,Public Works, Infrastructure, etc.) control agenda and have big power in what get considered & funded.
Many time President agenda never get considered thanks to people in charge of committees in House & Senate. How many time you hear congress leaders say President agenda DOA (dead on arrival).
