Wrong
Can we trust Sen. Coburn?

By World's Editorial Writers

We took Sen. Tom Coburn at his word this summer when he said he did not advise Sen. John Ensign to pay off Ensign's married mistress. At the time it seemed completely out of character for him to do so.

We've had our sharp differences with the senator, but he's always seemed to be a man of unquestionable moral fiber.

But now Coburn stands accused of participating in talks between Ensign and the woman's family by an unimpeachable witness — Coburn.

In an interview with the New York Times, Coburn said he attended a meeting set up by representatives of Cynthia Hampton, Ensign's mistress.

"It was wrong," Coburn told the newspaper.

We agree.

Coburn's answers to the newspaper contradict his early statements that he "categorically denied" discussions of payments to the Hamptons.

In the interview, Coburn told the newspaper that the Hamptons' attorney proposed a $8.5 million figure to him, and he rejected it as ridiculous, but he said he later passed on to Ensign a roughly $2 million proposal, which Ensign rejected.

In July, it was revealed that Ensign's parents had paid $96,000 to the Hamptons and two of their children.

Ensign is the one who's in the hottest water over this mess, and that's as it should be, but Coburn's admissions to the New York Times put all our assumptions about his character in question too.

What else don't we know about this man representing our state in the U.S. Senate? Perhaps more important, can we trust his answers to any questions in the future?

Coburn wasn't elected to put his fellow politicians first. He was elected to put the people of Oklahoma first.
.
Maybe Coburn was afraid of looking like a "fair weather friend".
.
Now he just looks like an ordinary liar.

I lost faith in Coburn several years back.
It`s nice to see You people are finally catching on.

Those are fair questions and I hope that they are looked into further. I also hope that they look into the Hampton family since it is illegal to ask for money they way that they did. Maybe we should send David Letterman to Washington to teach classes on how to deal with extortion.

So, will The Family back Coburn or hang him out to dry?

"...he's always seemed to be a man of unquestionable moral fiber"

Really? Too bad the Tulsa World hasn't dug a little deeper into the Good Doctor's "moral fiber". Maybe that's because Coburn does the bidding of the World's owner and his rich pals so whatever else he does is ignored...

"What else don't we know about this man representing our state in the U.S. Senate?"

Why don't you do some real journalism, find out and tell us about it?

Here's a good place for you to start:

Doctor Deacon is a member of a church/cult called "The Family". The Family believes they are "chosen of God" and can do no "wrong".

TW's editorial staff needs to investigate "The Family" that owns the home Coburn shares in DC. What is "The Family's" agenda? Who funds "The Family"? Is Oklahoma's other Senator, Inhofe, part of "The Family" and its network? Will TW's partnership with The Daily Oklahoman prevent them from having their reporters do real reporting?

Oklahoma's legislators, past (Largent) and present, are heavily involved in "The Family." There definitely needs to be some investigation of this creepy cult. Let's start with how they manage to get a congressional boarding house classified as a "church" to avoid paying taxes.

"The Family" believe that rules don't apply to them. God put them in power because they were worthy. Laws and standards of decency are for the little people.

When the people of this state vote solely on the basis of what letter is next to a candidate's name and associate that (R) with being right with Jesus, nobody should be surprised that we get characters like this representing us.

None of us likes for an outsider to tell us how to do our job. There are always internal factors the outsider cannot know about. Despite that, I am compelled to ask why the Tulsa World has not printed a review or other acknowledgment of the book "THE FAMILY: The Secret Fundamentalism At The Heart of American Power." This is the C Street dormitory, classified as a church, where both Senator Coburn and Inhofe either live or have close associations.

If this has been done and I missed it in the World, I apologize.

People are so quick to point fingers and sling mud when they automatically think they know all the facts of a given situation.Engage your brain before you shoot your mouth off!! No one knows all the facts except the people involoved. Dr.Cob-urn didn't even accept a raise when he had the opportunity. He is a man of character. Get over yourselfs. We all mistakes!! Even you Averill.

When Coburn lied he "categorically denied" doing what he was lying about. That's about as strong a
way as there is of saying I'm telling you the truth as there is. It turns out he was lying though. That's some character!

Unlike most of his constituents, Dr. Deacon can easily afford to decline a raise...he was born rich.

We now find the World's editorial staff suggesting that Senator Coburn is not to be trusted.

Last Sunday Mike Jones was telling us that we should pursue Osama bin Laden's advice and get out of Afghanistan. Surrender and leave those young Americans who died to avenge 9/11 to die in vain, just as the 58,000 young Americans who died in Vietnam died in vain.

Bruce Plante delights in bashing Republicans, Christians, and other American patriots, but he will never pen a cartoon which bashes this Mohammed dude, the Islamic terrorists, or their bizarre religion.

Just today the World published a column by Eugene Robinson titled "Shut Up and Salute, General McChrystal". If one looks carefully at the General, one will notice that atop his ribbons sits the Combat Infantryman's Badge (CIB). The Army doesn't pass that decoration out with the chow. It's awarded only to genuine heroes who have proven their patriotism under fire.

General McChrystal has spent his entire career studying and participating in warfare while Obama has never even worn his country's uniform, and has never been to Afghanistan.

Which of the two knows more about what's required to win in Afghanistan?

Can the editorial staff of the Tulsa World at least understand why some of their readers might ask the question "Whose side are these guys on, anyway"?

Royce, I for one appreciate our commander-in-chief taking the time to thoroughly examine a situation before making a decision that directly involves the lives of our servicemen. Would that Dubya had done a little more fact-finding before plunging us into Iraq.

Maintenance Man, I'm guessing you had no problem with the hate launched at Bill Clinton when he was dealing with "marital trouble."

dear Royce, my sons belong to that bizarre religion that you are referring to, and love that "mohammed dude". One is an airman first class in the airforce, the other starts basic in the marines in a couple of months. Please keep your thoughts to youself. Us Muslim mothers love our patriotic sons enough to tell you to shut up. It's not patriotic to bash the religion of the soldier protecting you.

Royce, We need to stick to the thread but in reply to your comment, not all the Generals agree with MacChrystal and he should have discussed this with the Commander and Chief in private before making it public. It wasn't the right thing to do for this country.

I support the way this President is handling the war he inherited and there are really no good choices. Our military is stressed as it is now and as Bush and Chaney proved hasty decisions aren’t the best way and prove to be irresponsible.

On what Lizzy said for the rest.
