Impasse over funding continues
Road construction on the westbound lanes of I-244 is seen looking east between Memorial Drive and U.S. 169 in June. MICHAEL WYKE / Tulsa World file

Even those Americans who don't give a hoot about politics have to wonder what Congress has in mind with this exasperating month-to-month highway funding scenario.
What are our representatives thinking? Or maybe a better question is: Are they thinking?
Oklahoma Transportation Secretary Gary Ridley probably has had more sleepless nights in the last few months than he has had in his entire life. He now has to worry that the state is going to miss an entire construction season because of Congress' failure to ensure an adequate highway funding stream for the coming year.
Ridley was in Washington a few days ago, pleading with Oklahoma's delegation to do something about the highway funding impasse.
The issue is complex, but in simple terms, what's going on is Congress is funding highway construction on a month-to-month basis rather than passing a longer extension of the highway funding program that would not only make planning and scheduling easier for states, but also provide them with more money.
Under the month-to-month approach, Oklahoma will get $15 million a month less than would have been expected under the expired funding formula.
Ridley made an obvious point to federal leaders that one would hope wouldn't even have to be made: that it is counterproductive to adopt a stimulus program to create jobs and improve infrastructure and at the same time stymie the traditional highway funding program — the granddaddy of job creation and infrastructure improvement.
It comes as no surprise that U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., is one of the roadblocks to a longer extension. Coburn has conceded that the current stopgap funding approach creates problems for Oklahoma, but he still favors that approach as a means of pushing fiscal discipline.
So in other words, representing the state's interests is not as important to him as pushing his pet philosophy.
Republican Sen. Jim Inhofe, on the other hand, sees the value of funding highways in Oklahoma and continues to push for a six-month funding extension.
"As Gary pointed out again," Inhofe said, "the costs of congressional inaction are high."
Indeed they are. Let's hope the more rational minds among Congress' ranks prevail soon, before Oklahoma's transportation infrastructure and economy deteriorate to even more serious levels.

This is the very reason I am removing myself from the political process. You vote people in to represent you and the interests of this state and they either sit on their hands or stick their head in the ground. Tom Coburn needs to go find something else to do because he sucks at what he's doing now. Quite frankly the communication between both representatives and this state is pathetic at best. TELL US WHAT YOUR DOING! I am so done with this nonsense.

Dr. Tom is saving us $15 million a month and the global gasses that go with it. And multiply that by 50 states and you get quite a savings. I say let them ride bikes, drive late at night, reschedule their lives. When our highways are almost empty at least 1/3 of the 24 hour day we don't need more lanes we need to rethink and reschedule.

Oklahoma also has too many military bases. When is Dr. Tom going to get rid of all the unnecessary political bases around the country? They are nothing but a hidden stimulus program that I am waiting for Fox and Tom to spotlight for what they really are. A debt to the dragon depleting our sovereignty.

We did have a fantastic chance to get rid of Vance AFB when its workers went on strike. That was the time to shut it down and move its training operations to New Mexico and Texas. But we relented and in 4 years be ready for strike # 3 at that base since its inception. Why it has passed BRAC cycles is beyond me.
As for highway funds we created a big, ugly, powerful monster that is now feeling how it works when you no longer have a blank check. Inefficiency, cost overruns, labor shortcuts have plagued this nation's highway building industry. Now that their black check mentality is gone maybe this will cull the herd and only the strongest, most efficient will survive.

And that, my friends, is what you get when you knee-jerk and elect an inexperienced idiot for a President and have morons in Congress.
Again, the Democratic Party has proven it's no better than -- oh, wait, even worse -- than the Republicans at super majority representation.

Popeye would prefer to elect congressmen who would make military service a prerequisite for young criminals and sexually irresponsible young people who make babies without providing for them, before they can receive health care coverage.
Popeye: Why do you want my son to be placed in a position to rely upon criminals and irresponsible people when he fights for this country?
Until you answer that question, I don't think that anyone should take your opinion seriously on any other issue. Stop running away.

As to Popeye's take on this letter-- He must have missed the point that TOM COBURN is one of the obstacles to resolving this dispute. It is conservative extremists like Coburn who are currently holding up highway funds. It has nothing to do with Obama.

Yes, Phillips. He said EXACTLY what I attributed just yesterday. Look it up on his profile. It is not blocked from you, so it will do you no good to whine that you can't find it. It was his point 6 of a "plan" to reform health care. He wants high school dropouts, young criminals, and young people who don't support their babies to be required to join the military as a precondition for being enrolled in public-funded health care.
I do not appreciate "conservative" ideas that would place my son in unnecessary danger when he is deployed into combat zones.
Did you know what you were talking about when you decided to pop-off this time. I didn't think so!!!!

For anyone having difficulty finding the reprehensible idea advanced by Popeye in the TW: Go to GOP: Health Test Recommendation Could Effect Care.
He posted a comment at 7:16 am on November 21 in which his sixth point would require a military enlistment for young high school dropouts, young criminals, and young sexually irresponsible people to be eligible for a public health plan.
Phillips should check things out before he jumps into the argument of two other people without knowing what he is talking about. It makes you appear to be either very reckless or very dishonest, Michael Phillips.

How humorous that TW is sitting amongst a City and a State that both are denying the elephant and living month to month and they then deprecate the same mentality(fear of losing at election time) in Washington! Meanwhile, Inhofe pushes for nonexistent Federal money to continue Oklahoma's Good Ol' Boys filling of potholes and living the high life, after voting for Bush's attempt at frugality in 2007 that brought on this mess!

Democrat, more phony posts? How am I supposed to keep up with your rants when you have so many? How am I supposed to know you are referring to comments made on a previous day when you make it appear as if you are referring to today's post? You probably anticipate that I follow your diatribes much more than I do. The truth is I had no idea of your latest plan to discredit Popeye.

Phillips: Did you go to the letter? Why do you insist on posting another comment accusing me of dishonesty when the proof is there for all to see? I did not state that Popeye made his horrible point on this letter and you have a long history with me and should know that I will remind a conservative of his past words. You do the same with your more liberal adversaries, my friend.
Are you trying to get me to name-call you? That is the only logical conclusion that one can draw from this latest willingness of yours to be deceptive.

Phillips: Check your profile page. You often have 6-10 consecutive comments addressed to yours truly. You spend a lot of time obsessing on my comments.
Are you going to deny that you don't bring up my past comments on new stories? LOL!!!!!!!
It is amazing that you couldn't tell that I was referring to a previous Popeye comment. After all, I sent two messages with the second comment addressing his comment on this article. (As to Popeye's take on this letter-- That is how I began the second comment.
No Michael. Your lame attempt to claim that you didn't understand that I was chiding Popeye for a previous comment just won't wash.
Nice deflection though.

zzx375 stated:"Who needs fiscal discipline?"
That has been the Republican Party motto since Dwight Eisenhower left office. All five budget surpluses achieved since Ike retired in 1961 occurred during Democratic administrations. Most of our current national debt has been compiled under only 3 Republican presidents (Reagan and 2 Bushes). Those are indisputable facts.

Democrat, you are too funny.
First of all, I didn't read any of the comments and I didn't write any comments on the story you referred to. When I wrote "You probably anticipate that I follow your diatribes much more than I do" I, of course, mean diatribes not directed at me.
Second you might consider that it takes me more than twelve minutes to read this letter, read all of the comments, reread popeye's comment to find something about "young criminals and sexually irresponsible young people" and then write my point. So I hadn't read your second comment. It would have been appropriate to explain what you were talking about in you initial comment, which you did not do.
Third when I respond to your comments I am obsessing and risk being accused of being a homosexual and when I don't you accuse me of running away.
Fourth when referring everyone to a story try to spell all of the words correctly, otherwise people might think you are a liar. Had it not been for Popeye's profile page I would still be looking for that story.
Finally, I am going to write what I often see you write. This is my last comment on this letter. There is a big difference however, when I write this I am telling the truth.

I hate doing this twice! Do you have to blame the President for everybody else's wrongs? Tom Coburm stands alone, believe me. He is responsible for his own doings. Why don't you look back into your own party? Can't stand to see all the wrongs they made or just won't admit 'they' made them, which ever this finger pointing stuff doesn't make it true ya know, can't you get that yet? I hate 'made up' news.
