The Tulsa City-County Library System continues to hunt for a new chief executive officer.

Former CEO Linda Saferite announced Aug. 4 that she would be on extended medical leave until she retires in March.

The library board met last week to talk about what its looking for in a new library boss, who will be earning $130,000 to $150,000 a year.

The responsibilities include fundraising, strategic direction and policies, long-range planning and community relations.

Those are important jobs, and we don't begrudge the planned salary, but the title CEO bothers us.

There's a name for the chief executive officer of a library — head librarian.

Titles are important. They reflect assumptions and duties to the public.

Chief executive officer is a good title for the bosses of business and industry.

Library bosses are different. The the top person might be the chief, and might be an executive, but the public needs to know the person running the libraries as a librarian. It reflects the traditional elements of what the institution is about.

Interestingly, state law requires that Tulsa's library director have at least a master's degree in library science. Not a master's degree in business administration. There's a reason for that.

If one of the new CEO's jobs is indeed community relations, we suggest one of that person's first actions be a decision to re-brand the job. We don't want a corporate bigwig running our libraries. We want a librarian.

"Chief executive officer is a good title for the bosses of business and industry"

Oh really? You'd think the MBA crowd would wake up to the fact that the CEO 'brand' is pretty much tainted beyond redemption. After all, aren't they supposed to be the smartest guys in the world?

Then again, maybe CEO is a good title for them. That way, the rest of us will know exactly who the scammers and crooks are...

Using this same thought process Mayor Taylor should have a degree in education to move on to her new job with the Governor. And I'll bet that none of the sitting county commissioners have ever even driven a road grader or backhoe. This library job will be a political appointment and nothing more. You don't need a Library Science degree for that.

I'm librarian and would apply for the job except that the commute to Grand Lake is a little too far for me.

And unfortunatley, I do disagree a bit with this. The people at the top of a library really is just a fund raiser. They need to be able to get influential folks on the phone, give sound bits to new media, host fancy fund-raising diners, and just kiss a lot of rich butt. It all has nothing to do with actually being a librarian.

You see the same thing at museums.

The operations of the library are usually run someone else.
CEO of the library is really corny, tho.

CEO, Director, Head Librarian... Who Cares! It's just a title and doesn’t really matter. What the Library needs is a leader, not a visionary right-brained bozo. Visioning is the Commission's job, what they need is a leader who can point them in the right direction, motivate employees, manage their budget, and hire able manager to do their jobs. At the moment their top floor 'executives' are under qualified and screwing things up; the new CEO needs to ruffle their feathers and take out the trash.

Electronic books are making libraries obsolete. They will be closing unneeded locations as you get downloads on a small computer like the Kindle. The current "CEO" has proved that any idiot can run the library system. Pay them $50,000.

Oh yeah? Try to get a copy of that bestseller that you want to read for the Kindle - for free. Yes, we pay taxes to use the library, but its a small amount per year, and it would take almost 5 years of that tax to pay for the Kindle alone.

Kindle downloads are 10 bucks and up per book, and an Ereader still costs 250 bucks. It doesn't matter what the format is, you still have to pay for your own copy - while at the library, you can get one for free.

Ten years ago, you walked into a bookstore and paid money for your own copy, or went to the library to get it for free. Today, you download your own copy and pay for it, or go to the library and get it for free.

Remember to thank the "guys" too.

Bubba - The downloads and readers will get cheaper and cheaper and the need for the bricks and mortar of the library system will decline. Tax supported libraries of the future will be high-tech much smaller and less labor intensive. The Tulsa libraries are offering free downloads already. My point is that the current infrastructure is becoming obsolete and overpaying some lazy lady to be CEO will no longer be needed.

It doesn't seem like a good move to me to pay $40,000+ in tuition to work forever to make it up to the top with that as the salary.
I do worry the Kindle and Readers will make it obsolete as I'm sure as the popularity rises the prices will reduce to encourage more and more to switch.
