Letter to the Editor: Coburn and veterans

By Timothy Beauchamp, Jay

Sen. Tom Coburn held up the Veterans Caregiver and Omnibus Health Benefits Act of 2009. Coburn, who didn't bother serving in the military, obviously thinks it is appropriate to play war hawk and send soldiers off to fight but then play games with the funding to take care of the troops who come back maimed or injured.

Coburn complained about the costs of this bill, but I don't remember him once protesting the supplemental funding for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Coburn also wholeheartedly supported the cost of massive military operations that have created a brand new generation of combat veterans. Why does war hawk Coburn suddenly become a fiscal hawk when it concerns the cost of benefits for those he sent off to war and have returned needing assistance?

Thirteen major military and veterans groups worked to force just one senator, Tom Coburn, to release the legal but informal hold he placed on the major veterans bill. I'm sick of Republicans, like Coburn, claiming to support the troops and then pulling political tricks like this that prove they don't do anything but pay lip service to that claim.

Editor's note: The measure was passed by the U.S. Senate last week after Coburn released his hold on the bill. Beauchamp is a Navy veteran and represents Congressional District 2 on the Oklahoma Democratic Party Veterans Committee.

Timothy, you're a Democrat? Who would have guessed?

-Michael Phillips-

So let me guess, Michael Phillips is a republican?
Phillips, what does being a democrat or republican have to do with supporting veterans who have served their country?

Mr. Beauchamp is correct in his recital of Coburn’s behavior. Coburn fits the description of a “Chicken Hawk”.

Michael, are you trying to defend Coburn’s stand, do you agree that our veterans deserve less funding than their active brothers? Thats the way Coburn has voted.

Why aren’t you shouting, along with a lot of other patriotic Americans, TAKE CARE OF OUR VETS !!.

It seems that your political stance and party is more important to you than caring for our heroic veterans.

The right-wingers don't care about anything but money and power. They are going to oppose everything the Democrat propose, even if it is good for America. The false prophets at Fox news give them talking points to regurgitate and they go forth spewing silliness. The right-wingers feel they must demonize everything coming out of Washington in order to regain control of Washington and return us to the days of Bush/Cheney.

Only two far left-wingers to counter MP's sensible comments about a nasty letter?

I think Coburn is going to loose a lot of support from the vet groups over this.

justice,

I'm a veteran. He didn't lose my support. Most vets will recognize what he was trying to accomplish and thank him for it.

I think I am a far-left right-winger....or maybe a far-right left-winger. Either way.

It saddens me, as an American, to see this type of political behavior. We have seen it before many times. Vote for expensive military action and try to cut costs on the back-end which usually is veteran care. Vote to tighten criminal laws then underfund prisons and guards.

I'm constantly told "you can't have it both ways." I don't. I just want it "done right the first time."

That goes for Colburn and everybody else.

Fredsdad is right.
.
The whole truth and nothing but the truth is not a guide line for writing newspaper articles or editorials.
.
There was more to this story then what TW or Associated Press wrote in their articles or editorials.

The writer is wrong aout Coburn's voting record. He has voted several times for veterans benefits ad voted against the war. He has received awards from veterans groups and more than likely will receive their endorsement. This is an all out Democrat effrt to unseat him, not something that is good for the country.

Fredsdad, skinex, I am a veteran too and a supporter of the VFW and I couldn't feel stronger about keeping Tom Coburn in the Senate. My fear isn't that he will lose his seat, but rather that he may walk away from it. The Democrats could always trot out Andrew Rice again, but I am hoping for an

fredsdad & Thunder196 are right.
Don't believe everything you read in the newspaper or hear on TV.
Go to the senate website and read the bill, including all of the pork attached for needless, worthless spending which has nothing to do with our veteran’s.
Don't make snap decisions before you have all the information.
Thank you Senator Coburn.

Good comment JCash,

I think the world of Senator Coburn. But,.....we cannot cut veterans benefits.
A way must be found. That's somewhat what he said,......but I want a workable, real-world solution.

Senator Coburn saw (sees) nothing wrong with spending 100's of billions for our un-funded foreign wars; and sees nothing wrong with his efforts to force women to give birth to a fetus they don't want (which costs our government hundreds of thousands of dollars for each un-aborted un-wanted fetus)and Coburn sees nothing wrong with voting to allow Catholic-owned Drug Stores to refuse to sell birth control drugs and devices to anyone wishing to purchasse them.

So look at what Coburn is willing to fund, compared to what he refuses to fund, and vote accordingly.

TO: skinex and other Couburn supporters,

I was just a Senator Coburn’s web site. He HAS voted LATELY to support SOME items for veterans, but only after a concerted effort by veterans groups to do so. However if you go back a ways you will find a series of “nay” votes on the funding of several different programs.

I think the most remarkable vote was on:
11/17/09 On the Amendment S.Amdt. 2733 to S.Amdt. 2730 to H.R. 3082 (Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations Act, 2010)To increase by $50,000,000 the amount available for the Department of Veterans.
Which passed 98 to 1, with his vote being the only nay vote.

If you go further back you will find a pattern of resistance, not support.

All I know is my brother in law is an Afghanistan veteran and he was appalled by Coburn's arrogance in holding up this veterans benefits bill.

I'm afraid that Senator Colburn does not give a hoot for veterans. He seems far more interested in power and money. He seems to have modest intelligence, just, sometimes, the wrong priorities.

Senator Coburn was not voting against Veterans care he was voting against the pork spending he tried to get the Democrats to drop from the bill and to show how they were going to fund the bill.
He also voted against the war and funding of the war if you will look at his record.

I'm a Veteran also and I support Tom Coburn. One of the issues about the Veterans bill was, it didn't cover WWII Vets or Vietnam Vets. That's what Coburn was holding out for. He wanted ALL Vets to be covered.

Bull, he wasn't holding out for veterans, it was his weird money thing. He doesn't hesitate to vote yes on any war whether the money is there or not, he sends the troops in pronto.

The reason Timothy is because that bill did little or nothing to fatten the wallets of the senator's campaign contributors.
