U.S.-WORLD
Fred Joseph
, who as CEO of investment bank Drexel Burnham Lambert helped create the modern junk-bond market in the 1980s before the firm's collapse, died Friday in New York after a long fight with multiple myeloma. He was 72.
Joseph, a graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Business School, arrived on Wall Street in 1963, joining the corporate finance department of E.F. Hutton. He later moved to Shearson Hammill, rising to chief operating officer before leaving to join Drexel's corporate finance department in 1974 when Shearson was bought out by Hayden Stone.
He was named the CEO of Drexel in 1985. With fellow executive Michael Milken, the company expanded the market for low-rated bonds, which most investors at the time considered too much of a risk but which quickly began to dominate the financial world.
The proceeds from junk-bond sales helped finance a wave of cutthroat corporate buyouts and made Drexel one of the most revered firms on Wall Street. But the company ultimately succumbed to a four-year criminal investigation into charges that Milken and others had used inside information to trade shares of companies considered takeover targets.
Milken ultimately pleaded guilty in 1989 to securities violations, served 22 months in prison and was fined $600 million. The scandal drove Drexel to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection the following year.
Joseph ultimately accepted blame for failing to supervise Milken, saying at the time that as CEO, he must bear responsibility for whatever "transpired on my watch." Joseph was banned from any managerial position with a securities firm for some time and agreed to pay a $3 million fine to federal thrift regulators.
Mike Penner
, a Los Angeles Times sports writer who announced two years ago that he was a transsexual and was changing his name to Christine Daniels, died Friday in Los Angeles. He was 52.
Los Angeles County Coroner's Lt. Brian Elias said officials hadn't yet performed an autopsy or issued an official cause of death.
The Times said in a story Saturday that Penner was believed to have committed suicide. Penner had returned to using the name Mike Penner last year and was a Times columnist at the time of his death.
In 25 years with the newspaper, Penner covered Major League Baseball, the National Football League, the Olympics, World Cup soccer, tennis and other sports. A fluid writer with a sharp wit, he worked at various times as a reporter, columnist and the newspaper's Los Angeles Angels beat writer.
Times Editor Russ Stanton said Penner "respected our readers a great deal, enough to share with them his very personal journey."
Penner revealed that journey on April 26, 2007, when he wrote a story for the Times headlined "Old Mike, New Christine," in which he revealed that he was taking a few weeks of vacation and that when he returned to his job as a sports writer it would be as a woman named Christine Daniels.
The announcement sent shock waves through the sports world, but Penner's bosses were supportive.
After his vacation, Penner did, indeed, return as Christine Daniels, not only continuing to report on sports for the Times but also writing a blog called "Woman in Transition," detailing his experiences.
At the time of his announcement he was married, and he declined to discuss his family situation. He said he was undergoing female hormone treatments but would not say whether he planned to undergo a sex-change operation.
He eventually dropped the "Woman in Transition" blog and returned to writing under the name Mike Penner.
Bob Twigg
, 62, a former USA Today reporter and editor of the Loudoun Times-Mirror who won $9 million in the Virginia lottery in 1996, died Nov. 16 of lung cancer at his home in Leesburg, Va.
Twigg worked for Gannett's USA Today for 16 years in a number of roles, including White House reporter, national editor and senior reporter. He covered the Reagan, Bush and Clinton administrations, including overseas travel, and worked on the newspaper's book about the Persian Gulf War.
In 1994, he took over the West Coast desk a week before Nicole Simpson and Ron Goldman were slain in Los Angeles and former football star O.J. Simpson was charged in the case. The crime and trial were front-page news for a year and a half. After Simpson's acquittal, Twigg covered stories including the Virginia Military Institute's reluctance to accept women and Hurricane Fran in the Carolinas.
Twigg started working at newspapers in Cumberland and Hagerstown before hiring on with the Pensacola News-Journal in Florida, where he became the editor. He joined USA Today in 1983.
In January 1996, while working a Sunday morning shift in the USA Today newsroom, he looked at a newswire story about the winning lottery numbers, 3-15-17-28-33-37. "I was dumbstruck. I didn't move. I just stared. I had won the lottery!" he wrote in a story for his newspaper. "I ran down the hall to the bathroom. That's how my Sunday began. Then disbelief took over. I did not say a word — to anyone. I didn't call my wife; she was at church. I didn't tell my co-workers. Not a peep. I absolutely refused to believe I beat the 7.1 million-to-1 odds."
Two hours later, The Associated Press reported that the lone winner of the lottery came from Leesburg. Twigg, unable to reach his wife by phone, pleaded an upset stomach to his boss and drove home.
The next day, a lawyer-friend verified the ticket with the state lottery office. Twigg begged off a news conference, wanting to break the news in his own paper.
Twigg wrote that he had been struggling with family medical bills, even though his company health insurance paid 80 percent of its cost. In addition to his journalism job, he had taken a part-time job at a hardware store and drove an eight-year-old Pontiac with 187,000 miles on the odometer.
