The buzz you hear is definitely the "Tulsa buzz" -- several music and culture mags have singled out Green Country and its bountiful music scene.

April's Spin music magazine (if you can find one -- they're selling out fast) features a two-page spread, "Tulsa Rock City," which highlights the city's outstanding live bands, music venues, events and history.

It was written by former Tulsa World music reporter Matthew Elliott.

"We've covered a lot of cities," said Spin's Rock City section editor and researcher David Marchese during a recent telephone interview. "Matthew picked everything out for this one -- and we just happened to agree that our readers would be interested in it.

"We know which cities are coming up, and Tulsa's definitely one of them."

Featured are "Local Heroes" Hanson, Davit Souders and Angie DeVore Green and her husband Tom Green, co-founders of the annual Dfest music festival; local Spot Music Award-winning bands Callupsie, The Effects, Congress of a Crow and PDA; influential T-Town nightspots Mercury Lounge, Cain's Ballroom, Soundpony, Exit 6C and the Continental; and quirky history bits on icons such as Leon Russell, J.J. Cale and even Luciano Pavarotti.

"The Flaming Lips are an indie rock institution," added editor Marchese of the Oklahoma City band. "They've brought a lot of focus to the state, as have J.J. Cale and Leon Russell.

"It's not
a particularly scientific decision: We just thought Tulsa would make a good choice."

On the cover is rock legend R.E.M.

Also this month, Paste music magazine features local powerpop stalwart Admiral Twin and its new album, "The Center of the Universe" in its "Paste Recommends" section.

And, Spotniks winner The Effects pulled double duty, also highlighted in Blender magazine's "Monsters of the Midwest: Starter Bands From the Heartland That We're Totally Gay For" roundup. To quote, "The Effects sounds like what rock 'n' roll should be."

Rock on, Tulsa.
