GOING ALL THE WAY:
"Sex and the City" shocked Hollywood by racking up $56.8 million on opening weekend, nearly double the industry estimates. In doing so, the fab four knocked Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull off its perch, as it earned $44.7 million.
THE UP SIDE:
In accumulating all that cash, "Sex and the City" also became the biggest opening R-rated comedy, passing the $45.1 million that "American Pie 2" earned in 2001. Only four other R-rated movies have opened better: "The Matrix Reloaded" ($91.8 million), "The Passion of the Christ" ($83.8 million), "300" ($70.9 million) and "Hannibal" ($58 million).
BOMB SQUAD:
It's tough to call a movie that has earned $115 million a bust, but in its third week "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian" is falling quickly. After adding in the $51 million it has made overseas, it still is about $34 million short of its estimated $200 million budget. The film may find its way into the black, but Disney may be wishing it had just sunk that money into a bond fund or something.
BATTLE ROYALE:
Now that the Giant Movie Releases are done for a few weeks, the predicting gets interesting again as there will be more competition for the top spot. This week pits the animated "Kung Fu Panda" against "You Don't Mess With the Zohan," starring reliable box-office star Adam Sandler. Will the kiddies win out this weekend?
Prediction:
Yep — "Kung Fu Panda" tops the charts with $40 million.
