Jazz series set for renovated Union Depot

The Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame will continue its 20th anniversary celebration and its first year in the renovated Union Depot with its "Autumn Jazz at the Depot" concert series.

The series will be made up of 15 concerts by local and regional artists performing music that covers most of the permutations of jazz as well as gospel, blues and pop.

Highlights of the series include well-known Tulsa pianist Chuck Gardner performing his original compositions; gospel standout Ernestine Dillard and the Tulsa Praise Orchestra; a concert version of Duke Ellington's "Sophisticated Ladies"; and the return of the J3 Acoustic Jazz and Blues Band.

Jazz Hall of Fame CEO Chuck Cissel said one show he is especially looking forward to is the American Jazz Museum All-Stars from Kansas City.

"The CEO of that museum, Greg Carroll, plays the vibes and piano," Cissel said, "so we're going to get together for a few numbers at that show — two jazz museum CEOs on the same stage."

Something festive

In addition to the Sunday concert series, the Hall of Fame will host two special events in October:

Oct. 2: "A Taste of Jazz 'n' Wine Festival," featuring Oklahoma wines, food from some of Tulsa's leading restaurants and performances by the John Hamill Trio.

Oct. 22: "Induction Banquet," honoring select Oklahoma jazz, blues and gospel musicians.

"In addition," Cissel said, "we are planning to
begin a capital improvement campaign this fall. The original Vision 2025 funding we received was for our first phase, which was to get into the depot and begin renovating this space.

"Now we need to begin work on phase two, which will address things such as renovating our lighting, flooring and ticket area, and — most importantly — installing a world-class sound system," Cissel said. "It's our goal that there be no greater sound anywhere in Tulsa than at the Jazz Depot."
