Next trip, download a book for road

There's nothing like 24 hours on the road in one month to make you yearn for good entertainment.
Two recent road trips to Texas gave audio books a whole new meaning for me. And even though I'm a few years late — try three — I discovered a great way to download audio books for free through the Tulsa City-County Library System.
Thanks to a suggestion from my assistant editor and my handy library card, I started browsing the library system's digital media center. Without major difficulty, I found exactly what I was looking for — a digital audio book I could download to my iPhone for my long trips.
Digital audiobooks have been available at the library system for about three years, said Rosemary Moran, manager of the library's collection development department.
"When it first started, the service was not compatible with iPods and we have added that capability, so now you can download either to your MP3 player or your iPod," Moran said. "I would say it's going great. I'm a big fan of it. I talk to people in the community who use it and they love it."
Here's how it works:
First, you log on to tulsaworld.com/libraryaudiobooks. Then download the OverDrive media console onto your computer. If you don't have a home computer, you may find the program on public computers at the Central and Hardesty library branches only.
Then choose your book, put it in your cart and start downloading. From there, you
can put it on your MP3 player, iPod or iPhone.
"For audio books, we have a total of 3,033 in the collection right now," Moran said. "And we have 186 downloadable music items and 186 videos."
Moran said best-sellers are the most in demand books, but she also included some classics.
"For a while most popular one was about learning Spanish language, then after that the 'Eragon' books took over, then 'Twilight' took over," Moran said. "The most checked out book at this time is 'Twilight.' "
