Laughter is good for us. It has therapeutic benefits.
The invitation to Montereau retirement community's Joy of Laughter Dinner touted the obvious. It prescribed "Funny Medicine" and posted the warning — side effects may include terminal giggles, side splitting, occasional guffaws and frequent tee-hees. If laughter continues for more than four hours, contact your physician.
Guests at the event that raised more than $30,000 for the Alzheimer's Association included dinner and musical comedy in Montereau's Coterie Theatre. Tulsans Susan Swatek, Betty Moses and Wayne Hardy wrote many of the hilarious parodies sung to familiar tunes.
Before the entertainment began, Montereau's President and CEO David Murlette announced that proceeds from the dinner had surpassed the goal and the sold-out audience cheered and celebrated by a round of blowing bubbles.
Cathy Audley was chairwoman of the planning committee.
When Judi VerHoef, CEO of the Alzheimer's Association's Oklahoma and Arkansas Chapter, spoke at Montereau's Town Hall, she said that Alzheimer's is the seventh-leading cause of death. In Oklahoma alone, more than 75,000 people are afflicted with the incurable disease.
Jo Ann Goss, Montereau resident and committee member, said, "I wanted to do this for Charles and to help give others the resources to cope with Alzheimer's." She was referring to her husband of 60 years, Charles Goss, retired president and CEO of Explorer Pipeline Co., who died two years ago.
Joining
Jo Ann on the planning committee were Montereau residents Gloria Webb, Kaye Klintworth, John Meyer, Ed and Frances Patterson and Bob Phillips. Staff members included Rami Hasbini, Carrie Allamby, Andy Eckstein and David Murlette.
Table sponsors included Explorer Pipeline, Bob and Joan Hunt, Jones Lang LaSalle Americas Inc., John Meyer, the Montereau Leadership Team, the Montereau Protestant Congregation, Don and Helen Oden, Ed and Frances Patterson, Bob Phillips, Right at Home, Gene Robinson, Lucy Rooney, Rear Admiral D. M. Showers, U.S. Food Service and the William K. Warren Foundation.
Half of the proceeds benefited the overall programs and services of the Alzheimer's Association, including research. The rest of the money will specifically support the Association's 24-hour HelpLine for families living with Alzheimer's.
Lucy Rooney attended the dinner with family members Marianne, Patrick and Rebecca Rooney. John Meyer's family members Pat Lutz, Cindy Bell and Betsy Wieding were there with Twink Yost.
Joan and Bob Hunt were joined by Ed and Frances Patterson, Vicki and Bill Grant, Helaine Lemon and Ed Flaxbart.
Also there were Cindy and Rod Sands, Curtis and Carol Craig, Todd and Tiffany Phillips, Jeff and Melissa Atkinson, Randy Henley, Jim and Judi VerHoef, David and Carrie Murlette, Floyd Autin, Jamie Townsend, Mary Laeger and Larry Lebold.
Others included Chip Paul and Erica Carter, Joy Neilson, Lee and Evelyn Adler, Don and Janet Whited, Gene Robinson and Ruby Farish, Dan and Eloise Rogers, Phoebe Schermerhorn, Lucy Masson and Jack Wesenberg.
