Sammy is quite a guy.

He has survived some very tough times and come through it all with a great attitude, an outgoing personality, and more than a little star quality.

Sammy, a mixed-breed dog who is a survivor of animal cruelty, charmed everyone he met when he was a special guest of honor at the Oklahoma Alliance for Animals' Fur Ball at the Crown Plaza Hotel.

Last year, Sammy was tied to the bumper of a truck and dragged at high speed for almost a mile in Creek County. The Oklahoma Alliance for Animals worked closely with law enforcement and even offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to arrests in the case. The suspects are awaiting trial on charges of animal cruelty.

Guests at the Fur Ball enjoyed cocktails and dinner, a Jay Litchfield auction and an awards program. Awards and winners included:

Making a Difference Award: Ward Wiseman Animal Haven.

Advocate in Action Award: Claudette Selph.

Kraft Honorary Achievement Award: Bill and Shelli Handy.

Ruth Steinberger Spay/Neuter Achievement Award: The Mobile Pet Vet, Bristow Veterinary Hospital, the Ark Animal Hospital and Hecht Veterinary Hospital.

The event chairwoman was Brenda Magoon, there with her husband, Bruce; and the co-chairwomen were Ruthie Duenner, there with her husband, Steve; and Shirley Hawkins, there with her husband, Charlie. County Commissioner Karen Keith was the master of ceremonies.

Also on the program were OAA
President Jamee Suarez-Howard and Ruth Steinberger of PetSmart Charities.

Others in the crowd included Tulsa Mayor-elect Dewey Bartlett and his wife, Victoria; featured Fur Ball artist Dana Gilpin; Kathy Hilti and Bob West; Lois and Dr. Jim Kraft; Nancy and Clark Lipotich; Kim and Dr. Bill Mitchell; Lacey and Dr. Marc Campbell; Steve Wolfe; Mary Young and Joe Gierek; Peter Walter; Joanne and Bill Detamore; Amanda and Robert Duenner; Allie and Rob Gallant; Pat Atkinson; Karen Mildren; Francine Bandy; and Carolyn Mortell of Stuart, Fla.

Sponsors included Bruce and Brenda Magoon, Dr. James and Lois Kraft, Zoller Designs & Antiques, Best Buy, Midwest Title Service, Urban Tulsa Weekly, Tulsa People magazine, the Anne and Henry Zarrow Foundation, Victor and Cynthia Mitchell, Allen and Jennifer Gann, Steve and Ruthie Duenner, Kathy Hilti, Bryan Close, Ruth K. Nelson Trust, KBEZ and Lobeck Taylor Foundation.

Also, Pooches, Andrea Schlanger, Broadhurst Foundation, Joe and Carol McGraw, Thirst Wine Merchants, Republic National Distributing, Leaping Horse Vineyards, Domaine Saint Vincent, Susan Flint Seay and Julie and Paul Stewart.

OAA works to make Tulsa and surrounding communities a place where no healthy adoptable companion animal is euthanized because it does not have a home.
