Tulsa Town Hall is celebrating its 75th anniversary as it applauds its past, celebrates its present and looks to the future.

The organization has brought us distinguished speakers such as Henry Kissinger, William Buckley, Gerald Ford, Phil Donahue and Bob Schieffer, who have spoken at venues ranging from the Ritz Theater to the Mayo Hotel's Crystal Ballroom and on to its present location at the Performing Arts Center.

Plans for the next chapter were on the agenda, when members and the advisory board gathered at the home of past president Roxana Lorton for an anniversary luncheon.

"The celebration began with the goal of increasing community awareness of Tulsa Town Hall and its endowment fund, and has culminated in a bonus gift lecture for subscribers and a 75th anniversary dinner," announced Linda Stoesser, 75th anniversary chairwoman.

Rufus Fears will be the keynote speaker at the 75th Celebration Dinner at the Mayo Hotel on May 13 and will present a bonus lecture for Town Hall subscribers on May 14. Fears, who holds the G.T. and Libby Blankenship Chair in the History of Liberty at the University of Oklahoma will speak on that subject and its impact on us all.

Stoesser thanked honorary anniversary co-chairwomen Roxana Lorton and Margery Bird.

Others on the program included council president Kay Dixon, Joan Hauger, Carol Leach, Gae Bachle, Mary Brett, Myrtis Smith and Joanie Atkinson.

Endowment committee chairwoman Ellie Emmons joined
past chairwomen Beverly Dieterlen and Kay Schermerhorn in noting that Tulsa Town Hall has been successful for 75 years because of its subscribers and annual patrons. The endowment fund, established in 1999, helps ensure that Tulsa Town Hall will remain a part of our community.

" 'Invest in the human mind and polish the gem within us all' were the bywords explaining the importance of the fund," Schermerhorn said. "An investment in the endowment fund helps ensure the future of Town Hall for our children and grandchildren."

Also at the event were council officers Mary Ann Lewis, Sue Gerkin, Judy Altman, Mary Husband, Genie Shannon, Linda Swain, Susan McCalman, council executive director Kathy Collins and former council executive director Nanci Calderwood.

Others attending included honorary historian Frances Chandler, Paula Unruh, Sharon Bartlett, Gayle Smith, Brenda Davis, Nan Smith, Denice Brice, Cora Baker, Mary McGraw, Kathy Haught and Marge Gaberino.

Contributions may be made in honor or in memory of someone and should be mailed to P.O. Box 52266, Tulsa, OK 74152.
