Santa is going to need a much bigger bag this Christmas.

BOk and KTUL Newschannel 8 are teaming up with the Salvation Army, Tulsa Area Command, to collect toys from now through Dec. 16 at all Tulsa area BOk locations. That includes Sand Springs, Broken Arrow, Owasso, Bixby, Jenks and supermarket locations.

This will help ensure that thousands of children will get a visit from that jolly ol' elf.

BOk Senior Executive Vice President Steve Bradshaw and Salvation Army Tulsa Area Commander Maj. Roy Williams met recently with Carole Lambert, KTUL anchor, to film a public service announcement emphasizing the importance of collecting toys for needy children.

"Families who struggle to keep a roof over their head and food on the table 364 days of the year should have one day to celebrate Christmas with their children," Williams said. "But they can't afford extras, such as toys. We're honored to have BOk and KTUL help us give families that ability."

The need is especially great this year, with many families suffering from job layoffs. The Salvation Army has registered 5,000 families for Christmas assistance, an increase of 1,000 families from last year.

"This year, more than ever, Tulsa-area children need our help. We're pleased to open our bank locations to collect donated toys," said Bradwshaw. "Let's join together in effort to keep the spirit of giving alive this holiday season."

A first for the Salvation Army Toy Drive this year is the addition of Toy Drive barrels at Woodland Hills Mall from Dec. 13 to 16. Salvation Army Toy Drive barrels will also be placed at selected Dollar General Stores.

"Please give whatever kind of toy you can afford," said Maj. Kathy Williams, who is in charge of toy distribution. "We guarantee a child will appreciate it."

It's so nice to see even in a recession, the giving spirit of many during this holiday season.
