Michael J. Fox has every reason to be as bitter as the alcoholic paraplegic he played recently in an episode of FX's "Rescue Me."
He was diagnosed in 1991 with Parkinson's disease — a degenerative brain disorder that affects muscle coordination — but didn't go public with it until 1998. In 2000, he was forced to give up his hit series "Spin City" because of the disease.
But it wasn't all bad.
He met the girl of his dreams, Tracy Pollan, on his other hit TV series, "Family Ties," and married her. They have four children.
The actor and film star will tell you every day isn't easy. But it could be worse, which Fox addresses in his books, "Lucky Man: A Memoir" and "Always Looking Up: The Adventures of an Incurable Optimist."
On Thursday, viewers can go along as he travels the world searching for answers to the questions ("What makes a person an optimist and how can being optimistic change your life, your health and your financial future?") in the new TV special, "Michael J. Fox: The Adventures of an Incurable Optimist."
