A local French Bulldog puppy named Yums is headed to the Big Show. Well, the puppy version that is.
Five-month-old Yums is in Maryland shooting Animal Planet's annual Puppy Bowl, which airs on the network the day of the Super Bowl. The sixth "Puppy Bowl" is scheduled to air in February 2010.
A pet lover's dream come true, the Puppy Bowl features animals featured on the Web site Petfinder.com. The dogs run around a puppy-friendly football "field" and play. And cat lovers enjoy the Bissell Kitty Half-Time Show, which features kittens playing on a "stage."
Yums — who has a black marking on her body that looks like an upside down heart — became a star, so to speak, after she was rescued through the Sapulpa-based Oklahoma Boston Terrier Rescue Society and the Furkidsrus French and English Bulldog Society.
"She has such a great personality. Everybody immediately falls in love with her," said Diana Erwin, a rescue worker whose family adopted Yums.
Erwin said Yums came to the shelter after she was deemed too small to be sold to a breeder. When Petfinder announced they were looking for dogs for the Puppy Bowl, Erwin said her group sent in Yums's information and photo.
Before her trip to Maryland, Yums appeared at the Coweta Public Library to help educate children about the responsibility of adopting animals.
"Kids will open up to a dog, and it just melts their hearts," Erwin said. "They really soften and open up. (Yums's)
littler personality alone really brings that out in people."
Yums will use her fame for more educational opportunities as a "spokesdog," Erwin said. "There are so many dogs that are up for adoption that need a home. We really felt she could have a voice for that."
