Michael Jackson: This Is It
'This is' no substitute for MJ

Michael Jackson's "This Is It" raises a question: That's it?

One of the great performing artists of the past half-century, and the send-off he receives is this documentary that's something of a half-movie?

Culled from a video collection of the late King of Pop in rehearsals for a never-to-be series of 50 concerts in London, the film features Jackson as he half-sings several songs. He half-dances his storied choreography. This is not a concert film; it's a concert-practice film, and it makes for a half-hearted affair that never explores Jackson the artist, the man, the enigma.

I know what some of you are thinking: You saw enough retrospective footage after his death on June 25. You heard enough rumor, fact and innuendo in the weeks that followed about doctors and drugs and past legal troubles, and you don't need that rehashed in "This Is It."

Fair enough. As the film says at the beginning, the documentary is "for the fans."

But as someone a tad younger than the 50-year-old Jackson and one who followed his career from his earliest performances and even 1970s Saturday morning cartoons, I found little in "This Is It" to enjoy as a fan. I don't want to remember Jackson lip-synching songs inside an empty arena on out-of-focus video.

Sold as a rare behind-the-scenes look, the film shows the performer as a gaunt stick-figure hidden behind sunglasses and ringlets of black hair in his face, but he does not appear sick, exhausted or stressed in the weeks leading up to his death. He
is in control, focused. He runs the show.

He is surrounded by dancers who worship him, and a band of sycophants, with tour director Kenny Ortega (who compiled the film footage for the documentary) playing the No. 1 yes-man. Jackson's genius is never challenged or even mildly debated.

Should it be? Probably not, and I couldn't help but wonder what Jackson the perfectionist would have thought of releasing "This Is It" in this rough-cut form, but we'll never know.

The film opens with subtitles detailing that Jackson was rehearsing this spring with a collection of dancers, musicians, backup singers and Ortega, and these events were being filmed for Jackson's personal library.

More than a dozen songs unspool against footage from weeks of rehearsals, and the result is odd to watch. There is consistent lip-syncing, with Jackson trying to save his voice. It saps any palpable electricity from tune after tune, most of which are cut together from multiple rehearsals, but with nary a hiccup in the sound.

The imagery of this facade is both weird and monotonous.

When he does go uncut on a version of "I Just Can't Stop Loving You," pairing up with a female backup singer and riffing on his hit, the result is memorable. He then immediately complains about having to sing out loud, only half-jokingly.

The most dynamic peeks come in looks at mounting the massive tour, like filming new video content full of zombies for "Thriller," which would have made for a dynamic opening to the song in concert, much like some of the video content displayed at the recent U2 concert in Norman.

Bottom line: The rough footage that was produced was never intended to be seen by the public, and it looks it.

Sony reportedly paid $60 million for 100-plus hours of video, in what feels like a post-mortem cash-grab, while saying it's being done "for the fans."

Let the poor man rest in peace.

Sorry, Lance-a-lot, his family will be milking his death for all it's worth, they seem to be all about the money, except for Michael's mother.

I think Michael 'jumped the shark' with 'Thriller'. It was a steady decline from there.

If you don't already believe Michael Jackson was the greatest entertainer of our time, if not of all time, then seeing a documentary highlighting his final endeavor isn't going to change your mind - but I believe he earned that status, never saw him perform live, and will have to make-do with this production. I go with an open mind, which seems like something many of you left in the car.

If you don't like him don't read about him. You can dislike his style of music, songwriting, dancing, and production, but to deny his genius shows ignorance.

Obviously, Michael Smith has no idea what a good documentary is. Especially if he is claiming to be a Michael Jackson fan. I was absolutely amazed at Michael Jackson's ability to control everything. This would have been an amazing concert, thanks in no small part to Jackson's perfectionism (if that's a word). I found certain parts of this movie absolutely amazing!!!"

This is the only comment thus far that should even be listed, and I agree completely.

I think the cow has run dry.

Jackson hadn't done anything worth noting since "Bad". Off the Wall, Thriller and Bad may be the three greatest trilogy albums of all time and I was not that much of a MJ fan.

That being said, whoever expected this "film" to be anything more than the family scraping bone marrow is a bit naive if you ask me.

He was a talented dancer and performer but I think he would be quite upset to see what his family has allowed with this footage and his music being the perfectionist he was. I'm sure he would have been happy with the notoriety and money though.

You will never hear the last of Michael Jackson as long as the talentless family can squeeze another dime from his fame.

Money grubbers.

I want to see the film because I think it will be interesting to see how people responded to him. There may have been some dark times in his life but who hasn't had those? I was not even that big of a fan but this man is a legend and his memory will live on forever like Elvis

he was an exceptionally talented man push into the limelight by his family..i was not an mj fan especially, but i think his music and his popularity peaked in the 80's..it seems now that his brothers and his father wish to capitalize on his past glory, (and not for his childrens sake)..his style was not the type that would have continued in a las vegas type showroom, and he would not have been an attraction doing "thriller" in his 60's..

Reviewer Michael Smith..........Are you CRAZY?? Is something wrong with you? I just returned from the AMC Southroads and saw "This Is It". If it doesn't win an Academy Award for a documentary, I will be shocked. Michael Jackson is the most compelling, consummate entertainer of our lifetime. His music MOVES people.......I would challenge anyone to go see "This Is It", and simply sit still in your seats. I will see it again before it leaves Tulsa, and will most certainly purchase the DVD. He is, indeed, the King of Pop.

I just watched this film and was totally blown away at MJ's ever expanding abilities to create on the spot ideas for this new concert series. He is a true and honest musical artist, and if this tour had ever come to the USA, it would have sold out at every stop, and been historical for its unique approach and totally original look adn soundscape, and now that he is gone, the world lost one of its most important musical inovators of all time.
