Thomas Shahan, former member of the Tulsa World’s Satellite staff, will be featured on the “Today” show at approximately 10 a.m. Friday.
A graduate of Jenks High School and a junior fine arts major at the University of Oklahoma, he will be interviewed about his macro photography images of insect eyes, specifically jumping spiders. His photography also appears in the October issue of Popular Photography magazine.
The morning show airs from 7-9 a.m., 10-11 a.m. and 1-2 p.m. weekdays on NBC, channel 2, cable 9.
The 21-year-old, who also won a recent NatureWorks contest with his macro photography, is creating “a different view of insects,” said his mother Karla Shahan, Thursday.
“It’s bringing notice to the world of insects and they are kind of the canary and the coal mine for us. I think he is bringing these bugs’ eyes to an artistic level. He particularly likes jumping spiders.”
His photography will also be featured upcoming children’s puzzles and his photo of an eight-eyed spider has been picked up by Spidertracks.com, a New Zealand company specializing in aircraft tracking systems, as its main logo.
“For him, it’s all about the bugs” said his mother. Shahan is the son of Karla and Bryan Shahan of Tulsa. See more of his insect photos at

I have always thought the Tulsa World’s Satellite staff were a great crew of youths, and I am happy to read about their continued achievements. Way to keep going Thomas.

I wonder how long Shahan has nightmares about freaky big bugs after these photo sessions.

The photos on the link are amazing! He makes these insects look beautiful, unlike the evil, menacing creatures they really are.
And I love all the different spider hairdos!

Speaking as someone who has been professionally photographing nature since this guy was FIVE, I am, of course, jealous of the attention he is getting. :) AND, very happy to see him get it. :)
