First wide-scale survey to track organic farming

The U.S. Department of Agriculture said it will conduct its first wide-scale survey of organic farming and use the results to help shape policy and funding.
The survey will cover production and marketing practices as well as income and expenses both for current organic farms and operations transitioning to that type of agriculture, the department said in a news release.
The survey will be mailed to all known organic-food producers early next month. Results will be published late in 2009, the USDA said.
The plan "is a direct response to the growing interest in organics among consumers, farmers and business," Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said in the release.
The USDA's 2007 Census of Agriculture found more than 20,000 U.S. farms engaged in organic-food production, about 1 percent of all operations.
Organic meat, fruit and vegetables sold by retailers such as Whole Foods Market Inc. are usually produced with fewer chemicals and more environmentally friendly farming practices.
