Thanks to Cortney Ketchum, it's OK for Cowboys to wear babydoll dresses.

The same goes for Tigers, Mustangs and a Hurricane — a golden one, specifically.

Ketchum, a Tulsa native and graduate of Oklahoma State University, recently launched Ketch the Spirit, a clothing line specializing in game-day apparel for women.

An advertising major, Ketchum has always had an interest in fashion design, she said during a recent phone interview from Dallas. She would search for trendy outfits to wear to sporting events and didn't find much.

So she started sketching her own designs, then showing them to her mother, who would sew them, Ketchum said. She wore them to events, people liked what they saw, and Ketch the Spirit was sparked.

Ketch the Spirit's lines, which are licensed by the Collegiate Licensing Co., consist of women's apparel supporting OSU, the University of Tulsa, Southern Methodist University, Louisiana State University, Texas Christian University and Texas Tech University teams.

Ketchum's offerings include a variety of babydolls, strapless and halter-top dresses, and shirts for each university in school colors and logos. The fabric is 92 percent cotton and 8 percent Spandex.

Girls love it, said Allison Keys, a buyer for and partner in the Wooden Nickel on Campus Corner in Stillwater, which recently picked up Ketch the Spirit.

"It's been unbelievable, the response we've had," said Keys, who has to reorder about once a week. Two standouts are the "Pokes" babydoll with a ruffle on the bottom and the Cowboys tube top.

Other stores that carry Ketch the Spirit include Dirty Laundry in Fort Worth, McCartney's University Spirit in Dallas, and Red and Black Bookstore in Lubbock, Texas. Ketchum is working to find a Tulsa store to carry the line.

"I've been very successful with the boutiques, and the dresses have been selling themselves," she said.

Although the designs are most appropriate for late spring to early fall, Ketchum said she designed them to be versatile for winter sports if worn with a cardigan, T-shirt or leggings.

She plans to release more team lines, such as Pittsburg (Kan.) State, Texas State, Texas A&M and Arizona State universities, this month.

Prices range from $56 to $74, and you can purchase them online at tulsaworld.com/ketchspirit .
