Plums and berries are good for you — and on your face, it seems.

These shades, as well as wine, are what the holiday season is all about, according to celebrity makeup artist Brett Freedman, whose clients include Vanessa Hudgens, Reba McEntire, Emily Blunt and Kelly Clarkson.

Berry, plum and wine colors are universally flattering, Freedman told us recently via e-mail.

They add brightness and instant glamour to the face — and, as you're about to see, they're easy to apply.

Wine and rosy eye shadow

Adding these fun shades to your makeup bag is as easy as heading to the drugstore.

"I love Maybelline's Rose Tints duo," he said ($3-$4, drug and grocery stores). "These shades give eyes instant intensity but with a soft vibe."

Here's how to apply them:

1. Sweep the lighter shade across lid and on brow bone. "I like to take the lightest, shimmery color, and smooth into the inner eye/tear duct area," he said. This trick catches light and brings eyes to life.

2. Using a small, tight brush, use the darker shade and dot/stroke under the bottom lash line. Keep it very close to the lash line. "I like to wet the small brush to get the most color impact and help with staying power," he said. Also, line about three-quarters toward the inner eye.

3. Using a slightly larger eye shadow brush, blend the deeper shade into the crease. Go from outer corner to three-fourths of the way toward the tear duct. "You want to really nudge out the lid so it really pops," he said. Blend up and outward to give the eyes a sexy lilt.

Crisp, dramatic brows

With an amped up eye, your best bet is to make sure your arches don't look low-watt.

Be sure to give your brows a nice tweeze/clean-up early in the season so they are always camera-ready, Freedman said.

When doing your makeup, define your brows with a pencil or powder that's one shade lighter than your hairs. You want a shadow of definition, not a hard filled-in line. His recommendation: Vanitymark's Ultra-Brow powder (see tulsaworld.com/vanitymark ).

"If you are wearing your hair up," he said, "give brows a touch-extra crispness since they will be center stage."

All-over shimmer

One mainstay in Freedman's kit is Lorac's Perfectly Lit pressed shimmer powder in Luminous ($32, Sephora and Sephora.com). It's a champagne-hued highlighter that can be used on cheeks, eyes and lips.

"I like to sweep a touch on apples of cheeks, middle of the eyelids and blended into the center of the lips with your lip color to give an extra eye catching glow," he said. "This is a makeup bag must- have."

Alluring lips

Girls, it's time to stand out and be bold.

This season, grab a lip color that demands attention, said Freedman, who recommends the "beautifully bold" YSL Candy Plum sheer lipstick ($30, Saks Fifth Avenue).

"You've been in a lip gloss haze the last few years, maybe it's time to rediscover the drama mama inside and embrace a classic," Freedman said.

More pigmented than a gloss, this YSL lip sheer gives your mouth a beautiful crispness.

Bonus: "With deeper shades, your teeth look extra pearly."
