The phrase "Hispanic culture" is a deceptively simple term to describe the great variety of life and history and heritage that fill the lower two-thirds of the Western Hemisphere. Each country has its own colorful celebrations of the past and present, all of which play a role in keeping traditions alive.

The Tulsa City-Country Library will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month from Tuesday to Oct. 15 with arts and crafts, fiestas, music and movies. "Living Latino Heritage @ the Library" is sponsored by Tulsa City-County Library's Hispanic Resource Center and Tulsa Library Trust. All library programs are free and open to the public.

A featured event during the monthlong celebration is "Fun With Lucha Libre @ the Library!" Children ages 12 and younger will have the opportunity to create a mask for their wrestling (called "Lucha Libre" in Mexico and other Central and South American countries) alter ego and learn of the legend in the silver mask. Preregistration is required and is limited to 20 participants at each location.

"Fun With Lucha Libre @ the Library" programs include:

Wednesday: Martin Regional Library, 2601 S. Garnett Road, 669-6340.

Sept. 22: Zarrow Regional Library, 2224 W. 51st St., 591-4366.

Sept. 24: Owasso Library, 103 W. Broadway, 591-4566.

Sept. 29: Broken Arrow Library, 300 W. Broadway, 251-5359.

Adults and teens can enjoy a full schedule of activities including:

"Latino Art After Hours @ Brookside": Featuraing artwork created by Tulsa's Latino community. 7-9 p.m. Friday, Brookside Library, 1207 E. 45th Place.

"Latino Cinema @ the Library": Watch the best of new and classic films. Call 669-6350 for specific titles. 7 p.m. Sept. 19 and 26, Oct. 9 and 16, Martin Regional Library.
