Handbook it: a DIY guide for grandparents

Today's grandparents are creative, active and willing to teach their grandchildren a thing or two. And they can get plenty of ideas from "The Grandparents Handbook" by Elizabeth LaBan (Quirk Books, $16.95).

The book outlines games, projects, recipes and crafts that grandparents can share with their favorite people.

Here's one idea adapted from the book:

Creating a family newspaper

1. Have your grandchild compile a list of family members to interview, then complete it by adding phone numbers, e-mail address and regular mailing addresses.

2. With your grandchild compile a list of interview questions: Did anyone in the family immigrate to the United States? If so, from which country? Did someone begin a business years ago? What was the best family vacation ever?

3. Help your grandchildren contact each family member by phone, e-mail or in person. Then, help them conduct the interview and take notes.

4. Help write up the stories. If your grandchild is too young to write, have him or her dictate what they remember from the conversations and then let them draw pictures showing the main aspects of the story.

5. Now bring out your photo albums and allow your grandchild to choose the pictures that best illustrate the stories. You can either scan the photos or tape the originals to your layout pages, which you can create on the computer or with paper.

6. Once the paper is finished, make
copies and give them to all your family members. Have your grandchild address the envelopes and mail the copies. This is a great way for them to learn where each group of relatives lives.
