The ninth annual Metropolitan Orchestra Festival, a day-long
orchestral workshop for elementary, middle and high school
musicians, will be held beginning at 9 a.m. Monday at the
Union High School Performing Arts Center, 6636 S. Mingo
Road.
The workshop will conclude with a free concert at 7 p.m.
Three groups will perform - a string orchestra made up of
fifth through eighth graders, a full orchestra of players
in grades eight through 12, and the Tulsa Youth Symphony.
Ron Wheeler, the Tulsa Philharmonic's education director
and conductor of the Youth Symphony, said, "This is a once-a-year
event that allows students in some of the smaller public
school music programs to play in large ensembles with other
players their age."
Students audition for spots in the workshop, and then spend
the day working with guest clinicians in polishing the pieces
they will perform that evening.
Conducting the string orchestra this year will be Dorothy
Hays, music teacher in the Putnam City School district.
The full orchestra will be conducted by Philharmonic music
director Bernard Rubenstein. Wheeler and Jack Roller will
conduct the Youth Symphony.
The concert is sponsored by the Junior Division of the Philharmonic
and is made possible by a grant from the State Arts Council
of Oklahoma.
