Tulsa’s 2009 quarterback watch landed a huge candidate on Friday afternoon.

The Golden Hurricane received a verbal commitment from Shavodrick Beaver, who switched his allegiance from Michigan. The 6-3, 185-pounder from Wichita Falls (Texas) Rider High School is ranked the country’s eighth-best QB by Rivals.com.

“It’s about who you’re going to be with over the next four years,” Beaver said on Friday, adding that proximity played a big role. “I was impressed with how (the Tulsa coaches) carried themselves. They told me everything that was offered, and everything they said made sense.”

Beaver said TU coach Todd Graham discussed the importance of growing as a person away from the football field, an emphasis that Michigan didn’t approach. It made a difference, the player said.

Beaver completed high school on Friday and plans to enroll at TU next month. He’ll battle with Jacob Bower and GJ Kinne during spring drills, with all eyes on the vacant starting position next fall.

“The coaches told me I could compete right away,” said Beaver, who threw for 2,545 yards and rushed for more than 400. “No offense to Bower and GJ Kinne, but they’re going to have to fight every single day because I like to fight every single day.”
