Looks like fans were glad to see Jay Leno back on “The Tonight Show” at 10:30 p.m. weeknights on NBC.
The NBC Universal-owned CNBC and the Web site tvbythenumbers.com are reporting Leno’s first night back dominated “The Late Show With David Letterman” in the same time period in the overnight Nielsen ratings.
Ininitial numbersdrawn from metered households in 56 markets, “The Tonight Show” earned a 5.4 rating and a 14 share Monday night compared to “The Late Show’s” 3 rating and an 8 share.
Ratings are the percentage of TV homes tuned into television. Metered homes are those in which the electronic equipment installed in the home automatically records what is being watched.
According to the Web site, the “Leno” ratings are in line with industry expectations for the first week or so of his return to the show and an after-glow effect following the 17 days viewers tuned in to watch Winter Olympics on NBC.
CBS had not posted its overnight ratings for “The Late Show” as of Tuesday morning.
