Tulsa co-offensive coordinator Herb Hand appears to have accepted a job on Vanderbilt's coaching staff, sources told the Tulsa World on Thursday night.
The Golden Hurricane players were informed in an early evening team meeting, a source confirmed.
Hand did not return a message left on his cell phone. The 42-year-old has spent the past four seasons as Tulsa's co-coordinator and offensive line coach. He was also the program's associate head coach.
TU has no comment. Spokesman Don Tomkalski said if there were anything to the announcement, it would be made in upcoming days. Vanderbilt is not expected to announce anything until next week.
Vanderbilt's Robbie Caldwell took over as interim head coach after Bobby Johnson abruptly stepped down on July 14. Caldwell was assistant head coach and offensive line coach at Vanderbilt before assuming his new duties.
Hand would be the fifth out of nine full-time assistants to leave Tulsa's program during the offseason. The only holdovers from last season would be defensive coaches Paul Randolph and Keith Patterson and offensive coaches Bill Blankenship and Mike Norvell.
Hand shared offensive coordinator duties with Gus Malzahn in his first two seasons with the Golden Hurricane. In 2009, he was listed as the offensive coordinator, but playcalling was shifted among different parties, including head coach Todd Graham.
Hand returned to co-offensive coordinator in 2010 when the Hurricane hired Chad Morris to reintroduce a Malzahn-style attack to the game plan.
Hand's loss wouldn't just be felt on the field, but the community. The past two summers, Hand and his church have had an outreach "Better Than Winning Football and Cheerleading Experience," a free camp for local youths that partnered with GUTS Church to provide food and water for children in Haiti.
