FIRST QUARTER

East Carolina 7, Tulsa 0

How: Jonathan Williams 37-yard run (Michael Barbour kick), 11:23.

Drive: 27 yards, one play, :17.

Breakdown: An early gift helps the Pirates after Damaris Johnson fumbles on the second play from scrimmage. After a holding call, Williams bounces off a packed line of scrimmage and rumbles around left tackle for a touchdown.

Tulsa 7, East Carolina 7

How: Alex Singleton 1-yard run (Kevin Fitzpatrick kick), 5:35.

Drive: 51 yards, seven plays, 3:01.

Breakdown: Trey Watts picks up 10 yards on first play, gets key third-down conversion with dive for extra yard on screen pass. Damaris Johnson has 21 yards on reverse and Singleton scores on a 1-yard plunge. It was only his sixth collegiate carry.

East Carolina 10, Tulsa 7

How: Barbour 38-yard field goal, 3:01

Drive: 50 yards, eight plays, 2:34.

Breakdown: Dwayne Harris caught a 21-yard pass to reach the Golden Hurricane 26-yard line. Tulsa's defense tightened up and forced the field goal.

SECOND QUARTER

Tulsa 13, East Carolina 10

How: Damaris Johnson 31-yard run (Charles Clay run failed), 7:15.

Drive: 80 yards, seven plays, 2:39.

Breakdown: Johnson made a highlight run into the end zone capped by a 5-yard dive into the end zone. The big play was G.J. Kinne's 26-yard throw to Jameel Owens across the middle on third-and-10. A fourth-down, two-point conversion failed and was a questionable call.

East Carolina 17, Tulsa 13

How: Lance Lewis 30-yard pass from Dominique Davis (Barbour kick), 4:30.

Drive: 64 yards, nine plays, 2:45.

Breakdown: Davis picked up a fourth-and-inches to extend the drive and then hit Joe Womack on third-and-7 to keep it alive. Lewis beat freshman Marco Nelson down the left sideline in one-on-one coverage.

East Carolina 17, Tulsa 16

How: Fitzpatrick 22-yard field goal, 1:13.

Drive: 78 yards, 11 plays, 3:17.

Breakdown: A sign of things to come? True freshman Ja'Terian Douglas and Thomas Roberson rip off 20-yard runs to chew up more than half the yardage of the scoring drive. Fitzpatrick, who had his first field-goal attempt blocked, splits the uprights.

THIRD QUARTER

Tulsa 23, East Carolina 17

How: Clay Sears 12-yard pass from G.J. Kinne (Fitzpatrick kick), 8:00.

Drive: 34 yards, five plays, 2:10.

Breakdown: Tulsa takes advantage of a short field given to it following big plays by the defense, and G.J. Kinne hits Trey Watts for 20-yard pass on third-and-5 to extend the drive. It is Sears' first career touchdown reception and seventh career.

East Carolina 24, Tulsa 23

How: Lewis 43-yard pass from Davis (Barbour kick), 6:48.

Drive: 56 yards, three plays, 1:12.

Breakdown: Return specialist Dwayne Harris gives ECU good field position at the ECU 44 and the Pirates march down in just three plays, with the combo connecting for another touchdown. Dexter McCoil was injured trying to tackle Lewis after he made the catch.

Tulsa 29, East Carolina 24

How: Jameel Owens 3-yard pass from Kinne (Kinne pass failed), 3:26.

Drive: 68 yards, eight plays, 3:26.

Breakdown: Kinne opens drive with 19-yard run and has 15 yards tacked on to the dash when an ECU defender grabs his face mask. Trey Watts has a nice 21-yard reception. The key play was probably the failed two-point conversion, when Kinne missed a wide-open Shavodrick Beaver.

FOURTH QUARTER

East Carolina 31, Tulsa 29

How: Davis 2-yard run (Barbour kick), 13:23.

Drive: 80 yards, 14 plays, 5:03.

Breakdown: The cross-country drive takes 14 plays, which is a long one considering the quick-striking ability of both offenses. Davis made big plays with his scrambling ability to keep the Hurricane defense out of rhythm.

Tulsa 35, East Carolina 31

How: Willie Carter 75-yard touchdown pass from Kinne (Kinne pass failed), 12:54.

Drive: 75 yards, three plays, :29

Breakdown: Faced with a loud crowd of 50,010 and a third-and-10, Carter throws a beautiful pass to Willie Carter, who outraces the defense to gave Tulsa the lead. The Hurricane goes 0-for-3 on two-point conversions.

East Carolina 38, Tulsa 35

How: Dwayne Harris 6-yard pass from Davis (Barbour kick), 9:48

Drive: 67 yards, 8 plays, 3:06

Breakdown: ECU moves the ball at ease on the Tulsa defense, with the big play coming on Harris' 39-yard reception against Tanner Antle. Antle caught Harris down the far sideline, but the ECU playmaker had the TD reception to put the Pirates on top.

Tulsa 42, East Carolina 38

How: Trae Johnson 11-yard pass from Kinne (Fitzpatrick kick), 8:15

Drive: 41 yards, five plays, 1:33

Breakdown: Trae Johnson makes a spectacular catch, grabbing a ricocheting pass off the hands of wide receiver Thomas Roberson in the end zone. TU quits going to two-point conversions and takes a four-point lead.

East Carolina 45, Tulsa 42

How: Harris 34-yard pass from Davis (Barbour kick), 6:05

Drive: 69 yards, six plays, 2:10

Breakdown: The Pirates drive on the Golden Hurricane defense, with a 26-yard crossing pass from Davis to Joe Womack covering 26 yards on fourth-and-3.

Tulsa 49, East Carolina 45

How: Charles Clay 3-yard pass from Kinne (Fitzpatrick kick), 1:22

Drive: 66 yards, 11 plays, 4:43

Breakdown: TU methodically moves the football downfield, with Kinne hitting Clay for a 27-yard pass early in the possession. Clay scored on a third-and-goal from the 3-yard line.

East Carolina 51, Tulsa 49

How: Justin Jones 33-yard pass from Davis (team rush failed), 0:00

Drive: 66 yards, 9 plays, 1:22

Breakdown: Tulsa cannot get the stop it needs on the game's final play, as 6-foot-8 Justin Jones outjumps the defense to pull down the game-winning touchdown and give TU its first loss to open the season since 2005.
