Leon Russell is getting his name in reflective lights.

A portion of a downtown street will receive Russell’s namesake in front of the Church Studio at Third Street and Trenton Avenue, where Russell and countless friends recorded music.

The section of the street that will be renamed is Third Street from Peoria Avenue to South Utica Avenue. To celebrate the dedication, the Pearl District Association and city of Tulsa will officially unveil the new Leon Russell Road signs at 7 p.m. Nov. 6.

In January, Russell had surgery to repair a chronic brain fluid leak, and was in poor health for a while afterward. His illness prompted many to question why Russell hadn’t been honored in the city he lived in for so much of his life. A Facebook group to get a downtown street named after Russell was started, and to date has 3,018 members.

After much discussion, the final spot agreed upon for Leon Russell Road was in the Pearl District, where the Church Studio has been resurrected and turned into a performance venue.
