During halftime of Wednesday’s 6:30 p.m. Texas-Oklahoma State basketball game at Gallagher-Iba Arena in Stillwater, a ceremony will be conducted to honor the 10 men who died in a Colorado plane crash.
Thursday is the 10th anniversary of the crash.
“You think back to that time and it’s hard to believe that it’s been 10 years ago,” Longhorn coach Rick Barnes said during Monday’s Big 12 coaches’ teleconference. “It was a very emotional time. I remember going to that memorial service (in Stillwater). You don’t want to ever forget what happened.
“It’s an emotional time and it should be an emotional time. Families lost loved ones. There will always be a void there. I really want to respect that and I certainly honor that.”
Barnes is the only current Big 12 head coach who was coaching in the league during the 2000-01 season. He says the seventh-ranked Longhorns “will be aware” of the significance of Wednesday’s commemoration at OSU.
“Some (Texas players) may not know exactly what it’s about, but we talked about it and will continue to talk about it because I want them to understand what happened,” Barnes said.
Last week’s victories over Texas A&M and Kansas vaulted Texas to the top of the Big 12 standings.
