Former Dallas Cowboys’ quarterback Troy Aikman and his wife are separating, he told the Dallas Morning News Monday.

“This has been a difficult decision for Rhonda and me but, after 10 years of marriage, we have decided to separate… We remain deeply committed to our children and respectfully ask that you honor our family’s privacy during this period of adjustment."

The NFL star, who graduated from Henryetta High School, married former Cowboys publicist Rhonda Worthey in April 2000 and they made their home in Dallas. They have three daughters including one from Mrs. Aikman’s previous marriage.

It's not known how long the couple has been separated but Frontburner.dmagazine.com reported this week that Aikman’s wife had purchased a house in North Dallas in November.

Aikman, who played for the University of Oklahoma before transferring to UCLA, retired from the NFL in 2001 and joined Fox television as a sports commentator.

He is scheduled to join Joe Buck in the broadcasting booth to cover Super Bowl XLV from Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on Feb. 6. The game will air on Fox, channel 23, cable 5 in Tulsa.
