The International Association of Venue managers has awarded the BOK Center the 2011 Venue Excellence award, according to center officials.

The award is given every year to one arena in the world and is based on four criteria -- operation excellence, team-building and professional development, safety and security and service to the community.

"It takes an entire community to win an award like this," said John Bolton, general manager of the SMG-managed facility during the Thursday press conference.

"As the world leader in venue management, we expect the best and I'm happy to say our management team in Tulsa has accomplished this goal in an amazing fashion," said Wes Westley, president and CEO of SMG Venue Management, said in a press statement.

The award is the only one given to an arena of the more than 1,200 member venues worldwide, said Dexter King, president and CEO of IAVM.
