Tulsa cornerback John Flanders has been declared academically ineligible and is seeking a waiver from the NCAA.
If the waiver is denied, Flanders will sit out the 2011 season as an academic redshirt and will have one year of eligibility remaining next fall.
Flanders, who is from Midwest City, was the hero in Tulsa’s 28-27 victory at Notre Dame with the game-sealing interception in the end zone in the final minute. He also had an interception return for a touchdown in the Hawaii Bowl.
Milton Howell will start in Flanders’ place at cornerback.
While Flanders will miss Saturday’s game against Oklahoma, his timeline for a return this season is dependent upon an NCAA decision.
His brother, Midwest City running back James Flanders, has given a verbal commitment to play at TU in 2012.
