Letter to the Editor: Beck no Chomsky

Paul Greenberg's piece ("The great explainers," Sept. 4), in which he implies that Noam Chomsky is in the same business as Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh and Keith Olbermann, should be viewed as employing one of those sneaky distortions that political axe-grinders love to slip in from time to time.

A majority of the public will have little, if any, notion of Chomsky. From reading Greenberg's column they will likely, and incorrectly, assume he is some sort of media personality or political hack, not the MIT professor emeritus and world-renowned intellectual that he is.

Over more than a half-century span, Chomsky has written something like 150 books and is highly respected in academia around the world. It's a pretty safe bet that Greenberg doesn't agree with Chomsky's views, but casting him as a Beck-Limbaugh-Olbermann sort is an obvious misinformation ploy.
