OU Talking Points

The joyride stops here
There is no denying how much Oklahoma relished its beatdown of Texas, for reasons on and off the field. It was a happy bus ride back up I-35, and a pleasant Sunday morning after.
With Kansas next on the schedule, the Sooners would be excused for enjoying their Red River conquest an extra few days. They didn't act like that was going to happen, however, after their first practice of this week.
"We still made a lot of mistakes on Saturday," defensive end David King said Monday night. "We didn't play anywhere near our capability. You can't ever be content. You get content, something like Missouri happens, and maybe next time we won't be so fortunate to come out with a W."
The Sooners won at Florida State Sept. 17, then beat Mizzou despite an uneven performance seven days later. They plan to stay on point Saturday night in Lawrence.
How bad can it get?
Assuming the Sooners care, they could make ugly work of the woeful Jayhawks. Don't be fooled by KU's 2-3 record - they beat McNeese State and Northern Illinois (barely) before surrendering 181 points in losses to Georgia Tech, Texas Tech and Oklahoma State.
Earlier this week, second-year coach Turner Gill actually said: "There are a lot of good things that have occurred in our football season. We are number one in the conference in net punting. We are number one in the conference in yards per game as far as amount of penalties."
Coach, if you're touting punting and friendliness, something is seriously wrong.
Expectations for Saturday are so low that a reporter asked Bob Stoops for his philosophy on running up the score.
"I just think heck, the other team needs to stop you," he answered, in part. "That's how I would feel, I know that."
Broyles' pursuit of history
Assuming the Sooners care, they'll get Ryan Broyles his most impressive record to date Saturday night. He is just four catches from breaking Taylor Stubblefield's all-time NCAA receptions record. He could get that on OU's opening drive against the nation's second-worst pass defense.
Broyles said this week he appreciated the record, but also emphasized he's had help the past four years, whether from his quarterbacks, play-callers or even his defenders who helped get OU's offense on the field.
Others in the program, meanwhile, continued to marvel at the senior captain. Kenny Stills, Broyles' heir apparent, called him "the total package."
"The guy has been unbelievable," Stoops said. "His hands, his competitiveness, his ability to find space, get behind people, he's really special."
