Three first-time entrants victorious
A new course route and ideal running conditions made Sunday's Williams Route 66 Marathon one for the record books.
Tulsan Maggie Nelsen recorded a new female course record, finishing the 26.2-mile course in 2:57.03. She was one of three winners on Sunday who was running in the race for the first time.
Joining Nelsen as first-time participants were Jennifer McConnell, who posted a time of 1:28.57 to capture the female half marathon title, and Jack Morrow, who recorded a winning time of 1:12.02 to earn the men's half marathon honor.
Defending champion Andy Derks of St. Louis once again captured the male marathon title. Derks shaved nearly four seconds off his 2010 winning time, finishing this year at 2:28.33. Derks said the time also marked the first time in five years that he had finished a marathon course in under 2:30.
Race officials said 6,600 runners competed in Saturday's 5k and fun run events, as well as Sunday's half marathon and full marathon.
