French kitchen-theme restaurant La Madeleine French Bakery & Cafe plans to open its first Tulsa location in March on Cherry Street.

The company is working to renovate a 3,500-square-foot property on the northwest corner of St. Louis Avenue and 15th Street.

"This is the first prototype that we've built almost from the ground up," La Madeleine spokeswoman Stephanie Miller said. "So it will be different than any location we've built before."

The property is the former location of La Donna's Fancy Food, which moved a block east in 2009.

"The restaurant is going to be really unique, just a warm, friendly, almost country kitchen design," said Herb Heiserman, managing principal partner at Streetsense, a Washington D.C.-based firm that is handling branding, marketing and design for the company, including the Tulsa project.

The Dallas-based restaurant chain is known for sandwiches, soups and pastas, in addition to French cooking favorites such as crepes, chicken friand and quiches.

The restaurant also makes fresh croissants, breads and pastries, as well as hot and cold coffee drinks.

"There will be a bakery theater where customers can see all the breads and baked goods being made," Heiserman said.

La Madeleine is spending about $250,000 on the renovation project, according to building permits filed with the city of Tulsa.

The restaurant will be open for breakfast, lunch and dinner services.

The Cherry Street location is the company's first venture into Oklahoma. Most of La Madeleine's 60 restaurants are in Texas, in addition to metro Washington D.C., Louisiana and Atlanta.
