News of the week
Big weekend: As 16 recruits made
official visits to the Oklahoma State
campus, it was a weekend defined more
by the effort to maintain the Cowboy
class than to add new names to the list.
Of the 16, only one player — 6-foot-3,
205-pound wide receiver Chance Allen
of Fort Bend, Texas — has not expressed
a commitment to any school. Reportedly,
Allen also is interested in Oregon
and Mississippi State.
Four visitors currently are committed
to other schools. But by virtue of having
made the trip to Stillwater, their commitments
apparently are not unbreakable.
They included Kevin Peterson, a
Wagoner defensive back and the Tulsa
World state player of the year; LaDarrell
McNeil, a defensive back from Wilmer-
Hutchins High School in Dallas; Michael
Wilson, a 6-foot-6, 280-pound offensive
tackle from Aledo, Texas; and Jhajuan
Seales, a wide receiver from Memorial
High School in Port Arthur, Texas.
Peterson committed to Oklahoma
in December. McNeil is committed to
Tennessee. Wilson has expressed a
commitment to Texas A&M and Seales
says he is committed to Houston.
The other 11 weekend visitors were
players who for several months have
been firm OSU commitments. They
were Zac Veatch, a tight end from Broken
Arrow; Blake Webb, a wide receiver
from The Woodlands, Texas; Paul Lewis,
an offensive lineman from Galena Park
(Texas) North Shore High School; Greg
Brantley, an offensive lineman from Carthage,
Texas; C.J. Curry, a wide receiver
from Flowery Branch, Ga.; Eric Davis,
a defensive end from John Tyler High
School in Tyler, Texas; Victor Irokansi, a
defensive end from Hendrickson High
School in Pflugerville, Texas; Ashton
Lampkin, a defensive back from Dunbar
High School in Fort Worth; Wes Lunt,
a quarterback from Rochester, Ill.; Emmanuel
Ogbah, a defensive end from
George Bush High School in Fort Bend,
Texas; and Dominic Ramacher, a tight
end-linebacker from Guyer High School
in Denton, Texas.
Lunt already is enrolled at OSU and
will participate in spring drills.
Signing day countdown
The OSU commitment list currently
includes 16 prospects. The Cowboys are
expected to sign at least 20 players and
possibly as many as 22.
Verbal commitments are nonbinding.
High school recruits may sign
national letters of intent on Feb. 1.
The rankings
Rivals: No. 38
Scout: No. 38
Position watch: Running back
In each recruiting class since Mike
Gundy became head coach in 2005,
OSU has signed at least one running
back. In 2005, there was Kevin White. In
2006, there were Dantrell Savage, Keith
Toston and Preston Brown. In 2007, Kendall
Hunter and Adrian Moore. In 2008,
Kye Staley and Beau Johnson. In 2009,
Jeremy Smith and Dexter Pratt. In 2010,
Joseph Randle. In 2011, Herschel Sims.
Savage, Toston, Hunter and Randle became
1,000-yard backs for the Cowboys.
It is believed that OSU would like to
include one running back in its 2012
class, but it may not happen. There is no
running back among the Cowboys’ 16
committed prospects.
