OKLAHOMA CITY - Union has been chasing the 6A state swimming team championships for a long time.

Much of that time was spent chasing rival Jenks.

But Saturday the tide turned as Union was the team to beat scoring 267 points to win the boys state swimming championship at the Oklahoma City Community College Aquatic Center over favored Bartlesville, which tallied 243. Edmond North was third at 238 and Jenks hung on for fourth with 230.

Edmond North topped the girls 6A for the second straight year beating Jenks 347-262. Union finished third with 207 points.

Union coach David Lynn knew the boys race was going to be close to the finish.

"It was pins and needles to the very last second," said Lynn, who has been coaching Union for 15 years. "This is an elusive thing to do, but it is ever so satisfying."

It was a team effort for Union.

"We had 19 swim for the boys, and 15 of them scored points for us. Of our 12 girls, 10 scored. Everybody contributed," Lynn said.

The biggest piece of the puzzle was senior Eastman Holloway, who won in two events and set two state records. Chase Davis also won the 200-IM for Union.

"(Holloway) is a great swimmer, but if we have any pieces missing, the wheels fall off," Lynn said. "We scored in every event except one. Josh Hill got sick last night, or we would have been scoring in every event."

Holloway completed a perfect four-year run with Union going 8-of-8 at state.

Holloway reset his 200-free record of 1:39.99 with a 1:39.66 then came back and blew away the 500-free record of 4:31.91 set in 2000 by Sean Smith of Westmoore with a time of 4:30.30. The clocking beat the unofficial time of 4:31.61 at the Jenks Invitational two weeks ago.

"That was my goal," Holloway said of the 500 record. "This has been the hardest season of my life. Everybody gets knocked down, but the question is how quick are you going to get up. That is what I did this year."

Holloway set three state records over his four years at Union.

"I am an eight-time state champion and made my All-American in six events," said Holloway, who will be going to SMU. "Next year I am going to go to the NCAAs."

Erin Beu left a lasting impression at Owasso by winning two events.

"Finally after four years I got first place," Beu said. "Now I have two this year. I am the first ever Owasso female to be a state champion, so that is pretty exciting."

Beu turned in her best time in the 100-fly.

Beu is now weighing her college options.

"I am debating between Henderson State and Arkansas, SMU and Missouri," she said.

Union's Erika McGovern (100 breaststroke), Jenks' Montana Gaffney (500 freestyle) and Broken Arrow's Breonna Barker (100 freestyle) also win individual state titles in 6A girls.
