OKLAHOMA CITY - All four members of Congress seeking re-election and most Tulsa-area legislative incumbents were among the nearly 200 candidates filing for state and federal office Wednesday at the state Capitol.
Also filing were five Republicans and three Democrats seeking the 2nd Congressional District seat being vacated by Democrat Dan Boren. At least one more Republican and one more Democrat are expected to file before the books close at 5 p.m. Friday.
Also filing Wednesday were Corporation Commissioners Bob Anthony and Patrice Douglas, the only statewide officials up for election this year. Anthony is seeking a fifth six-year term, while Douglas will be trying to complete the unexpired term of former Commissioner Jeff Cloud.
As has been the custom in recent years, state Rep. Mike Reynolds, R-Oklahoma City, was the first to file at 8 a.m., followed by more than 70 hopefuls in the first hour and more than 100 by noon.
Among the notables:
- Republican U.S. Reps. Tom Cole, James Lankford, Frank Lucas and John Sullivan all filed Wednesday, and all except Sullivan filed in person. Only Lucas, representing the 3rd District, did not have an opponent after the first day.
Filing for Sullivan's 1st District seat were Republican Jim Bridenstine and Democrat John Olson, the only other announced candidates.
Republican Gary Caissie and Democrat Donna Marie Bebo filed in opposition to Cole in the 4th District, and Democrat Tom Guild formally entered the 5th District race against Lankford.
- Filing for the wide-open 2nd Congressional District were Republicans George Faught, Markwayne Mullin, Dustin Rowe, Dwayne Thompson and Dakota Wood, and Democrats Earl Everett and Wayne Herriman.
Republican Wayne Pettigrew and Democrat Rob Wallace are expected to file over the next two days.
- Among area incumbents, the only ones not filing on Monday were Senate District 37 Republican Dan Newberry of Tulsa, House District 12 Democrat Wade Rousselot and HD 29 Republican Skye McNiel of Bristow. All are expected to seek re-election.
Newberry has a challenger from the right in Mark Croucher, a former candidate for insurance commissioner. Democrat David Narcomey, who ran against McNiel two years ago, filed Monday.
Republican David Tackett filed in Rousselot's rural Wagoner County district.
- Other Tulsa-area incumbents drawing first-day opponents were Democrat Jerry Shoemake in HD16, Republican Sean Roberts in HD36, Republican Jadine Nollan in HD66 and Republican Weldon Watson in HD79.
Watson and Roberts ran into primary opposition - Watson from Tulsa school board member Lois Jacobs and Roberts from Collinsville Mayor Stan Sallee.
Democrat David Phillips, who lost in the HD66 primary two years ago and has been campaigning more or less nonstop since, entered the race for that seat Monday.
In HD16, which includes southernmost Tulsa County as well as parts of Muskogee, Okmulgee and Wagoner counties, former Republican congressional candidate Daniel Arnett entered the race.
Another Tulsa-area incumbent, Sen. Tom Adelson, was essentially redistricted out of his seat and has not said whether he will file for office in a new district.
Rep. Jabar Shumate, D-Tulsa, is leaving his HD73 seat to run for the vacant Senate District 11 position. Democrat Joe Williams and independent Curtis Mullins also filed Monday.
- Three Republicans and a Democrat filed for HD23. The seat had been held by the late Sue Tibbs, who died Friday but would have been term-limited in any event.
Two Republicans, Shane Saunders and Ken Walker, filed in HD70, which will be open because of term limits. Katie Henke, embroiled in the sorting out of the razor-thin HD71 special election, was the only candidate to file for the regular election.
- Former Corporation Commission administrator Brooks Mitchell filed for the position held by Anthony, saying he left the commission specifically to run against Anthony.
- The 192 people filing Wednesday was slightly more than first-day filing four years ago but far short of the 284 who filed on the first day in 2004. Typically, about 70 percent of all filings are on the first day.
"Overall, the candidate filing went very smoothly," said state Election Board Secretary Paul Ziriax.
