Janie Lou “Porter” Newton lost her battle with cancer on April 15, 2012. Born in New Orleans on February 13, 1940 to Homer and Jan Porter and raised in Jackson, Mississippi, Janie Lou has two surviving brothers, Richard and George Porter. She attended Murrah High School and the University of Oklahoma where she met her sweetheart and future husband, G.W. Bill Newton. They enjoyed 51 years of marriage and were blessed with three children and ten incredible grandchildren: Ted and Amy Newton of Norman and their children Jonathan, Nicolas, Analynn and Sullivan; Chris and Jan Girouard of Tulsa and their children Christian, Katie and John Paul; Jon and Ashlee of Norman and their children Porter, Maggie and Gracie. Janie Lou enjoyed volunteering. She was a long time member of the Junior League and served on the Board for Methodist Manor, the Norman Ballet Company and was a long time member of the Carpenter Class at her beloved First United Methodist Church. Janie Lou was in her true element and prime of her life while employed at the Polo Shop in Utica Square. Through this job she touched many people with a kind word, her quick wit and her infectious smile. Her customer’s loyalty and deep friendships were a result of her generous spirit and her southern charm. Services will be held Saturday, April 21, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church of Tulsa, 1115 S. Boulder, with a reception immediately following.
