OKLAHOMA CITY - When asked how long he had worked for his company, one of Terry May's longtime employees, also his beloved late father-in-law, used to quip: "Ever since they started watching me."
Turning serious, May observed that "it's what you do when nobody's watching that defines your ethics, character and integrity."
May's comments came Wednesday during the seventh-annual Compass Awards luncheon, where his Tulsa-based cathodic protection firm, MESA, and OGE Energy Corp. were honored for best practices in business ethics.
Devon Energy Corp. Executive Chairman J. Larry Nichols received the Executive Pilot Award, and business guru Stephen M.R. Covey shared nuggets from his latest book, "Smart Trust."
