Trey Whaley scored on a sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Jordan Mings in the bottom of the ninth inning as Oklahoma State scored a 2-1 win over Texas Tech on Friday night in Stillwater.
OSU pitcher Andrew Heaney turned in another dominating performance, allowing a run in 8 1/3 innings before giving way to Blake Barnes, who got the last two outs in the top of the ninth inning.
In the bottom of the ninth, Whaley drew a one-out walk, Gabe Weidenaar was hit by a pitch, and pinch-hitter Victor Romero singled to load the bases. Mings then lifted a fly ball to left field, and Whaley raced home and slid in ahead of the throw for the winning run.
It was the first RBI of Mings' career.
The Red Raiders (22-18, 3-10 in Big 12) scored their only run in the fifth on a two-out RBI single by Nick Hanslik.
The Cowboys (20-17, 6-7) tied the score in the sixth as Hunter Bailey singled with two outs, Robbie Rea walked and Jared Womack singled up the middle to score Bailey.
ORU 9, Western Illinois 3: At J.L. Johnson Stadium, Jose Trevino and Nate Goro each homered as the Golden Eagles (18-18, 5-3 Summit) rolled to a big win in their Summit League series opener.
